Herbs

Spices and herbs are common in most foods around the world today. Both are used to flavor foods and some for medicinal purposes. Herbs and spices have both been prominent throughout human history. In earlier times, herbs and spices were considered luxuries and only available for the use of the wealthy. Herbs and spices were also traded frequently between nations in medieval times. Many people do not know the difference between an herb and a spice. There are many similarities between the two, and some of the differences are very subtle, but they are still valid.

The essential difference between an herb and a spice is where it is obtained from on a plant. Herbs usually come from the leafy part of a plant, and are usually dried. However, some herbs can be used fresh. Spices can be obtained from seeds, fruits, roots, bark, or some other vegetative substance. Spices are not necessarily as fresh as some herbs can be. Herbs can be found many places around the world, while spices are more commonly found in the Far East and tropical countries. Herbs are considered to have a few more uses than spices. For instance, herbs have been used more frequently than spices in the medical field. Also, herbs can and have been used to augment cosmetics and preserve foods.

Some argue that there is no distinction between herbs and spices, considering both have similar uses. However, a botanical definition reveals that an herb is a plant that doesn’t produce a woody stem. It is common knowledge that in certain areas of the United States, a dried herb is considered to be a spice. This leads to more confusion because if a spice is simply an herb, then there cannot be a difference between the two. However, believing this is ignoring the fact that many herbs tend to be leafy green substances and spices are found in plants that are tropical in nature.

Because herbs and spices have so many uses and are great food flavorings, they have played important roles throughout history. The Portuguese navigator, Vasco Da Gama, sailed to India in search of spices. Even Christopher Columbus described the types of spices available in the “new world” to investors after he landed. Herbs have been used throughout history for medicinal purposes. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), herbology (the study of herbs for medical purposes) has been used for thousands of years.

The debate between herbs and spices is ongoing. Some say that there is no difference, while others maintain that they are both completely different. Most learned scholars will say that the difference between an herb and a spice is found in where the herb or spice is obtained on the plant, and where that specific plant can be found.

Soma treats

Treating discomfort associated with certain painful muscle conditions. It is usually used along with rest and physical therapy.

Soma is a skeletal muscle relaxant. It works in the brain and spinal cord to relax the muscles. It also causes drowsiness.

If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Soma , check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Some people who use Soma for a long time may develop a need to continue taking it. People who take high doses are also at risk. This is known as DEPENDENCE or addiction. If you stop taking Soma suddenly, you may have WITHDRAWAL symptoms. These may include stomach cramps, trouble sleeping, headache, nausea, or seizure.

Soma blocks pain

What is Soma?

Soma is a muscle relaxer that works by blocking pain sensations between the nerves and the brain.

Soma is used together with rest and physical therapy to treat injuries and other painful musculoskeletal conditions.

Soma may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Important information about Soma
This medication may be habit-forming and should be used only by the person it was prescribed for. Soma should never be given to another person, especially someone who has a history of drug abuse or addiction. Keep the medication in a secure place where others cannot get to it. You may have withdrawal symptoms when you stop using Soma after using it over a long period of time. Do not stop using Soma suddenly without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely. Soma can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase drowsiness and dizziness caused by Soma.
Before taking Soma
Do not use Soma if you are allergic to carisoprodol or meprobamate (Equanil, Miltown), or if you have porphyria.

Before using Soma, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have:

* epilepsy or other seizure disorder;

Tell your doctor if you regularly use any of these other medicines. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase drowsiness and dizziness caused by Soma.

Solving the Autism Problem

There is no one therapy that does it all. And,
to complicate it further, like most “mental”
problems”, it’s not simple to diagnose. In the
younger ages, it’s easily confused with mental
retardation, or brain damage.

What are the known causes of autism? Perhaps the
best known today is the usage of mercury (
thimeroserol) in infant and childhood vaccines.
Only in the past few years was this practice
discontinued. So, we’ve literally poisoned
millions of children with good intent!
Protecting them from dangerous childhood diseases
has caused much worse problems.

Another well known cause of autism is food
sensitivity and allergy. Virtually every known
mental problem may be caused by a normally
harmless allergen – a simple food that has been ”
recognized” by that person’s immune system as ”
dangerous”.

This seems to be caused by what is called “leaky
gut syndrome”. A major theory in this cause is
that the malnourishment of the mother prior to
birth and during initial feeding after birth
opens the entrances from the gut too much in the
attempt to obtain more needed vitamins and
minerals and enzymes, etc.

This larger “leaky gut opening” allows larger ”
particles” thru the gut walls into the portal
vein. Instead of digested single amino acids, or
simple combinations of a few amino acids, longer
chains of amino acids are allowed thru. These
larger than “normal” collections of amino acids
may then be recognized by the immune system as
possible viruses, bacteria, or even parasites.
This particular collection of amino acids is now
a distinct allergen to that person, even though
it is actually harmless.

There are possibly many other minor causes and/or
combinations of causes. We know very little
about the evolution of our immune system, and how
allergy/sensitivity is developed.

What can we do to “normalize” autistic children?
What are the answers that we already know?

The Mercury Toxicity Problem<
/font>

As a former orthomolecular psychologist, mineral
toxicity is well known to me. I’ve seen several
schizophrenic patients “cured” that suffered from
copper toxicity in particular.

The first step is diagnosis of this problem. Is
mineral toxicity involved? There are several
different ways to diagnose mineral toxicity. In
my opinion the best way is a mineral hair
analysis. Most MD’s prefer a 24 hour urine
collection. Actual blood tests and urine and
saliva tests are not reliable.

It seems that all toxic minerals are stopped from
getting into the brain by the filtering and
storage facility of the liver. A large amount of
mercury getting to the brain would be very
dangerous, so the liver stops it and stores it,
and then gradually releases as small an amount
back into the bloodstream so that it can be
excreted. Hair is an excretion route, and an
inch or so of hair tells a “history” of mineral
excretion over a period of weeks. While hair
analysis isn’t very accurate insofar as amount in
the body, it’s very accurate as to what’s been
excreted over time.

A hair analysis would be my first step towards
solving the autism problem.

Supposing that the hair analysis came back
showing large amounts of mercury. What to do
next? The answer is some form of chelation.

Chelation means “to grab onto”. There are
several drugs that do this for minerals. In the
blood stream, these drugs (EDTA and others)
literally grab onto minerals, and allow them to
exit the body thru the kidney/urine excretion
system. This usually involves going to a
chelation clinic, sitting for an hour or so with
a needle in the arm. It’s not that uncomfortable,
although a small child might find it so. This
procedure is done several times over a period of
several weeks.

. One problem with this is that because the
chelation agent (drug) “claws onto” all minerals
in the blood stream, it takes out essential
minerals as well as the toxic ones. So, it
becomes very necessary to supplement the minerals
our bodies need for everyday use. In effect,
taking all out, good and bad, and putting back
the good.

It’s also not cheap, as it involves “doctor time”.

I successfully used a cheap and effective
alternate in my practice. Vitamin C. Vitamin C
combines with minerals in the bloodstream
metabolically to form a mineral “Ascorbate”
combination that is also water soluble and passes
out thru the same kidney/urine exit.

There are several advantages to using Vitamin C
instead of drugs. It is a natural antibiotic
that kills both viruses and bacteria in the
bloodstream. So, people who use it will be
healthier than most, AND they’ll be getting rid
of toxic minerals at the same time.
The same thing happens as does with drugs. Since
vitamin C combines with ALL minerals, we are
taking out the essential ones along with the
toxic ones. So, all the essential ones must be
supplemented daily.

Few people realize the truth about vitamin C
today, in spite of the work done by Linus Pauling,
a true genius. The “spin” by nutritionists and
MD’s and the RDA has us taking very insufficient
amounts of vitamin C for daily use. Did you know
that the veterinarian RDA for a 150 pound ape is
4000 mg (4 grams) per day? We humans and other
primates such as that ape handle vitamin C
exactly the same. The RDA is under 100 mg (0.1
gram).

For schizophrenic adults I worked with in past
years, I used 10 grams per day in split doses.
For these patients, their schizoid symptoms
seemed to disappear within two weeks or so, but
surprisingly, a six month hair analysis showed
even high levels of copper. Carl Pfeiffer, a
mentor, and a good friend, explained that the
body is now allowing more toxic material out of
storage into the bloodstream so that it can be
excreted safely. Most goes out via the kidney/
urine pathway, but also hair. To my surprise,
this increase in hair levels was actually good.

Allergy/Sensitivity Problem

The “leaky gut syndrome” is becoming a huge
health problem, albeit unknown to most people and
even most physicians. It’s a function of our
culture moving more and more away from healthful
foods containing good nutrition and moving more
and more to sweet and pre-processed foods without
good balanced nutrition.

Because we have evolved requiring certain amounts
and balances of vitamins, minerals, amino acids,
fatty acids, and enzymes derived from what we eat,
we, as a culture are not getting even close to
sufficient nutrition for good health without
taking vitamin mineral supplements. One theory
of “leaky gut syndrome” is that each generation,
being malnourished, has to find a way to get more
necessary nutrients, and allowing more amino
acids and other needed nutrients thru the walls
of the intestines, this is accomplished.

There are several possible answers to this
particular problem:

1. Giving the person with the problem digestive
enzymes. This helps the digestive system do a
better job, breaking up proteins into amino acids
easier to digest as small peptides and individual
amino acids. This solves part of the problem at
least, especially in those cases where digestive
problems are present. Of course, protease is the
most desired.

2. Avoiding those foods that are most likely the
allergens that the immune system has “decided”
are enemies. This is the basis of the milk free
and gluten free diets that are popular, and have
proved of value for some autistic cases.

3. Allergy search and solution. The only really
effective “test and cure” system is the End-
Point-Titration method. This not only finds both
allergies and sensitivities, but also provides a
neutralizing amount. Unfortunately, the costs
are prohibitive, ranging in the tens of thousands
of dollars. A free allergen test may be found at
Free
Allergy Test<.a>

4. EEG Biofeedback (aka Neurofeedback or
Neurotherapy) has long been used with ADD/ADHD
successfully. Dr von Hilsheimer in Orlando has
successfully worked with several autistic
children using this therapy. He has taken well
over 200 sessions with several patients. The
problem is that it is very expensive and uses a
lot of “doctor time”.

5. A new therapy called Neuroliminal Brain Wave
Training was invented by me in 2004. It does
exactly what EEG Biofeedback does, namely change
brain wave strengths (and in the case of autism
patients, increases brain blood flow (similar to
HEG biofeedback).
Besides being as successful as EEG BF, it
actually has several other advantages for autism
cases:

a. Very affordable cost – a fraction of EEG BF,
a viable alternative to the dangerous drugs used
for the ADD-autism continuum. Mid and low income
families simply cannot afford EEG BF, leaving the
only real choice the dangerous drugs.

b. Very simple to use at home. No messing
around with wires and sticky paste or even bulky
helmets. Even the “worst” autistic kids can be
trained without problems.

c. No motivation required to simply go to sleep.
With ADD/ADHD and high functioning autistics,
motivation is a critical factor in success.

In a recent test of 9 autistic children from 3 to
11 years of age, over an eight week period, ALL
nine improved, some dramatically, and some slowly.
This is exactly what would be expected if using
EEG and HEG BF. All parents put up a $100
deposit, and if no improvement was found, they
could get that back. All preferred to keep it
and continue training.

Those are the options I see at present. Autism
is increasing as our nutrition is decreasing, and
more and more toxins are used for good reasons
that have bad effects.

If I had a child who was autistic, or even slow
to develop, what would I do?

1. Start Neuroliminal Brain Wave Training
immediately.

2. I’d do a hair analysis to see if mercury is
at toxic levels, and if so, I’d start my child on
5-10 grams of vitamin C per day.

3. I’d try a Caveman Diet for a week or so to
try to determine if common allergens such as milk
or grains are a major culprit.

4. I’d investigate digestive enzymes for autism
on the web, and start using them.

The belt and suspender theory seems to me to be
the best way – do all that you can as soon as you
know about the problem and possible solutions.
The sooner the autistic child is started on these
programs the closer to “normal” they usually
become.

There is no magic pill. All these programs take
time. Magic pills usually aren’t anyway, and all
drugs have serious side effects for some at least.
What I have outlined does not in any way.
Unfortunately, the physician’s dictum “do no harm”
is no longer the case.

Why Hypnosis

So how can hypnotherapy help you with your problem?

People can find themselves looking for hypnosis therapy for a number of reasons. Perhaps you have a bad habit such as smoking that you are trying to break. Or maybe you want to loose weight, tried all the diets and nothing has helped.

Another reason may be because of a relationship breakdown, or jealousy in a relationship.

All these are common reasons as to why someone may be looking for a hypnotherapist to help them with their everyday issues.

Hypnotherapy is not a new concept, infact; it has been around since the beginning of time. Some animals put themselves in a trance like state when they go into hibernation and are able to go without nourishment for long periods of time.

Hypnotherapy became more understood by physicians around the 19th century.

It is true to say that not everyone can be hypnotised. Research shows that people with the ability to perceive what is going on around them and recognise changes in their own awareness may block themselves from being helped through therapy.

Others can find that they are easily hypnotised. This is because they are more able to enter a trance like state and respond better to suggestions through their subconciousness.

Hypnotherapy has also been tested along with modern medicines to analyse people’s different responses to treatment.

On a number of occasions, groups of people who are receiving the same medical treatment have been separated and hypnosis therapy has been given to one section of the group to see what affects may occur.

More often than not, those who received hypnosis therapy felt less pain and anxiety and made a speedier recovery, which in turn, saved costs on medical treatment.

It is unfortunate that most people’s first introduction to hypnotherapy is stage hypnosis which gives the idea that hypnotherapy is where someone puts you under a spell and controls your movements causing you to perform in front of an audience some kind of bizarre act.

This is not what hypnotherapy is all about.

When a person looks to a hypnotherapist to help them with their problem, although they will put in a very relaxed state, they are always going to be aware of what is happening around them.

Hypnotherapy has helped lots of people with various different conditions, psychological as well as having a positive effect on their behaviour and has been effectively demonstrated through medical research.

Hypnosis has helped people overcome common and uncommon issues that people are faced with in their everyday lives, offering a release from pressures and conditions that seem to have a hold over them either by bad habits such as smoking or psychological issues such as jealousy.

Whatever the issue is that you may be facing, hypnosis can have a positive effect and help you overcome these issues.

Sleeping Problems in the Elderly

Sleeping problems in the elderly are more than likely to manifest in a particular pattern, depending on the health of the person, and the prescription drugs they may be taking for their health problems. The quality of their sleep may change considerably, either because of less demands on their energy as a result of retirement, or through illness.

Illness disrupts sleep patters in the elderly, and may result in increased awakenings due to physical discomfort.Urinary urgency, cramps, angina, chronic obstructive airways disease, and left ventricular failure may be some of the many illnesses which cause sleep problems in the elderly.

An elderly person may become very anxious about a change in their sleep pattern, however, it will be necessary to thoroughly investigate the problem in order to ascertain if this perceived sleeping problem, causes dysfunction in their waking activities. If the elderly person has a carer, or lives with family then the problem may be easier to assess, for what appears to be a problem may only be a normal change in sleep pattern for the age.

The most frequently occurring sleep problem in the elderly appears to be sleep latency, the person may spend some hours in bed before sleep occurs. This may be perceived by the elderly person to be a problem, and sleeping pills may be sought.Sleep latency is more common in females, and this appears to apply in all age groups, not just to elderly persons, however, it does occur more often in elderly females.

Possibly reduced daytime activity, combined with daytime naps may contribute to reduced quality of sleep in the elderly. The pressure of a normal working day has been taken away, so the energy output is considerably less, while this may be offered as a possible reason for sleep latency, many others factors may be involved.

There may be much confusion about sleep latency, the difficulty may be exaggerated because the person who experiences it may be convinced that unless they have 8 hours of quality sleep, they will become ill.Sometimes it is difficult to convince an elderly person that they no longer require 8 hours of unbroken sleep, but may be better served by a shorter night time sleep supplemented with day time naps.

Re the old remedy of a glass of milk before bed:
According to Jean Carper, The Food Pharmacy, milk for insomniacs, never!
Milk, particularly low fat milk wakes you up. ” Milk deliver tyrosine to the brain, which in turn triggers production of dopamine and norepinephrine, stimulating you to think more quickly, and accurately”.

So how can sleep problems in the elderly be resolved? Firstly, a warm comfortable noise free environment, regular exercise, good diet, no heavy meals at night, no eating late at night, relaxation therapies, aromatherapy, herbs like valerian may be taken as a tea, provided that your doctor has been consulted. Homeopathy is the cheapest, the least invasive, the most gentle, with no side effects, and no interactions with any drugs you may be taking. No homeopathic remedies are recommended here for it is important to consult a qualified homeopath in order to achieve the best outcome for the patient.

Sleep problems in the elderly should be thoroughly investigated before any medications are prescribed. Unfortunately this is not always the procedure that is adopted, for often a script is written for what has been described as insomnia by the elderly person, however, such is mostly not the case, but rather it’s a normal progression of a resetting of the circadian rhythms which requires education, not medication.

Provided that there is no evidence of disease of the central nervous system, such as dementia, Parkinson’s disease, post-traumatic brain damage , and chronic pain, then sleep problems in the elderly are far better managed conservatively.

Skin Cancer

There are over one million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed every year in the United States, representing about half of all cancers diagnosed in the country. And skin cancer on a dramatic increase. There are twice as many skin cancers in our population today as there were 20 years ago. Given this rate of increase, chances are about 50/50 that you will develop at least one skin cancer lesion if you live to age 70. This is especially true if you are fair-skinned. While skin cancer can occur in people of all races, those with lighter skin have a much higher risk because their skin contains less of the pigment melanin, which helps protect against an overdose of the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays, which can lead to skin cancer over time. The effect is apparently cumulative. A body of evidence also suggests that this also applies if you decide to go the “fake bake” route of the tanning salons.

Thankfully, most skin cancers, about 95 percent, are not life threatening. Skin cancer falls into two broad areas: basal-cell cancer / sqamous-cell cancer, and melanoma. The two most common of these cancers are the basal-cell and sqamous-cell carcinomas. These typically are easily treated, usually with surgery, and rarely lead to death. If neglected, however, over time, these can eventually lead to disfigurement and/or can spread with dire consequences. Only about 5 percent of all skin cancers are malignant melanomas, but these are far more dangerous and account for almost all deaths due to skin cancer. This aggressive form of cancer needs to be addressed immediately. Like most cancers, the risk of malignant melanomas will increase with age. If you feel you have developed any type of skin cancer be sure to see a dermatologist at once.

Most skin cancers, as one might imagine, occur on the face, neck and hands as these are the areas that receive the most exposure to the sun due to the fact that most of us wear clothes. These are also the areas that are most exposed to the view of others. As the usual AMA’s (American Medical Association) approach to skin cancer is knife and needle, this can leave unsightly scars just where you might not want any.

But there are alternatives. Having had a number of non-melanoma skin cancers, I’ve had the opportunity to try both the AMA (have the scars to prove it) as well as several “alternative” approaches. The method of treatment that I’ve settled on is the herb Chaparral. Chaparral is a plant that grows in the deserts of the southwestern U.S. and has been used historically by the indigenous populations of the region for a number of ailments. Today, it can be found in powder form at most health food stores. A small bag is all one needs and only cost a few bucks. I make a paste by mixing the powder with wheat germ oil (also found at your local health food store) and apply it directly to the lesion. Then I cover it with a Band-Aid. I do this once in the morning (after my shower) and again in the evening for six or seven days- carefully removing the old paste with a Q-tip. The advantages I have found are as follows: No pain. Perhaps a slight tingling at first. As chaparral only targets the cancerous cells, without affecting the surrounding normal tissue, my skin can quickly begin to repair itself naturally after the cancer is gone leaving usually just a “new skin” pink spot for several months. And all this at a fraction of the cost of a surgical procedure.

If this all seems a bit strange to you, please understand that this is nothing new. There are a number of books that have been written that offer other non-evasive, less painful methods of treating basal cell and squamous cell skin cancers as well. I would recommend the book, The Skin Cancer Answer: The Natural Treatment for Basal and Sqamos-Cell Carcinomas and Keratoses. This book is priced right, easy to read and provides you with what many might feel is a better method of treatment. But check around- and see what work best for you, knowing that many others have taken the non-AMA approach. In any event, use a dermatologist to diagnose what type of skin condition you might have, discuss it with him, but know that there may be cost effective, alternatives to the knife and needle.

Six Steps of Healing

WHAT ARE THE SIX STEPS OF HEALING?

These are remedies you can use for your problem in order from safest to most dangerous: Step 0 is the safest; Step 6 the most dangerous. Use Steps 0, 1, 2 and 3 as preventive medicine. Prevention is an important, though often invisible, way of healing/wholing in the Wise Woman tradition. Deep relaxation, information exchange, energetic engagement, optimum nourishment (including touch) and exercise promote health with little or no side effects.

Examples are in parenthesis: (with a few of the modalities available at each step)

Step 0: Do Nothing
(sleep, meditate, unplug the clock or the telephone)

A vital, invisible step.

Step 1: Collect Information
(low-tech diagnosis, books, support groups, divination)

tep 2: Engage the Energy
(prayer, homeopathy, ceremony, affirmations, color, laughter)

Step 3: Nourish and Tonify
(herbal infusions and vinegars, hugs, exercise, food choices, gentle massage, yoga stretches)

Note: Healing with Steps 4, 5, and 6 always causes some harm.

Step 4: Stimulate/Sedate
(hot or cold water, many herbal tinctures, acupuncture)

For every stimulation/sedation, there is an opposite sedation/stimulation, sooner or later. Addiction is possible if this step is overused.

Step 5a: Use Supplements
(synthesized or concentrated vitamins, minerals, and food substances such as nutritional yeast, blue-green algae, bran, royal jelly or spirulina)

Supplements are not Step 3. There’s always a risk with synthesized concentrated substances that they’ll do more harm than good.

Step 5b: Use Drugs
(chemotherapy, tamoxifen, hormones, high dilution homeopathics, and potentially toxic herbs)

Overdose may cause grave injury or death.

Step 6: Break and Enter
(threatening language, surgery, colonics, radiation therapies, psychoactive drugs, invasive diagnostic tests such as mammograms and C-T scans)

Side effects are inevitable and may include permanent injury or death.

HOW TO USE THE SIX STEPS OF HEALING

If you want to remedy your problem with the least possible side effects and danger, start at Step 1. After reading Step 1, pick one remedy from Step 2 and set a time limit for working with it. If your problem is unresolved within that time, decide if the time limit needs expanding or if you are ready to go to Step 3. Continue in this manner, moving to Steps 4, 5 or 6 as needed, until your problem is solved.

Each step up increases the possibility of side effects and their severity so try at least one of the Step 2 techniques, even if they seem strange to you, before going onto the remedies of Step 3 and beyond (note also that time spent at Step 2 will help you choose appropriate remedies at Step 3 and so on). When your problem is resolved don’t stop. Go back through the steps, in reverse, before resting at Step 0.

You can continue to take remedies from a previous Step after moving on, but be cautious about the use of Step 4 remedies in combination with Step 5 remedies.

If you deem it necessary to heal through Step 5 and/or 6 (and real healing can and does take place with the aid of drugs and surgery) and have not yet tried any techniques from Steps 2 and 3, do so immediately. Engaging the energy, nourishing and tonifying will aid and abet the healing powers of the more dangerous healing ways and help prevent or moderate their side effects.

Should Reiki Really Be Considered A Massage Therapy

I don’t know about you but when I go for a massage I expect the massage therapist to use their hands, fingers and maybe even their elbows to loosen my stress-laden muscles. There is nothing more delightful than an experienced pair of hands that helps to expunge all of the bad stuff from my body that causes me to become tense, anxious and, perhaps, a bit unpleasant to be around sometimes.

I still vividly remember a visit with a physical therapist for a problem that I was having with a disk in my neck. The disk was pinching a nerve which was causing pain in my neck, back and arm. A particularly annoying area was near my shoulder above my shoulder blade. As I sat in a massage chair, the therapist used her elbow to dig right into the affected area with a force that caused some serious discomfort. But when I left that morning, the pain was almost gone. Now that was massage!

Recently, I was introduced to the concept of Reiki. I was reading up on the various forms of massage therapy and, quite frequently, Reiki was listed as a therapeutic option or as part of the curriculum at a massage school. Further reading about Reiki has caused me to question references to Reiki in the same context as massage. In fact, I began to wonder why Reiki was included in references to massage at all. And I’m not the only one.

Massage is generally defined as “the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes, healing or relaxation.” I would think that “manipulation” is the operative word here. The practice of Reiki takes a quite different approach. Like Shiatsu massage, Reiki seeks to balance “ki” or “life force energy” within the body. The theory, according to ancient Oriental philosophy, is that if this energy is out of balance in the body, or is depleted, then an individual becomes susceptible to physical and emotional ailments. Practitioners of Reiki seek to channel energy into their clients in a manner that corrects imbalances and promotes healing.

However, based on the prescribed methods of practicing Reiki, there is no “manipulation” involved. In fact, in some cases, there is not even actual touch involved in Reiki treatments. That would certainly present a conflict between the generally accepted definition of massage and the practice of Reiki.

Reiki, as practiced today, was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui, a minister and head of a Christian school in Japan. His students had asked him how Jesus healed. Usui did not have the answer but became fixated on discovering how Jesus had cured the ill and infirmed. ( I guess “because he was the Son of God” does not qualify as an acceptable answer.)

Dr. Usui spent years studying in Christian schools, Buddhist monasteries and temples. He found no answer to the healing question until he embarked on a 21 day fast. At the end of the fast he apparently had a revelatory experience that showed him the methods he had sought to understand. He then set about on a healing ministry. Eventually, he shared his knowledge with Dr. Chujiro Hyashi who, in turn shared the knowledge with Mrs. Hawayo Takata who trained 22 Reiki Masters who then shared the knowledge with thousands of others.

Essentially, Reiki transfers energy from the Reiki practitioner to the patient. Actually, Reiki teaches that the patient draws this energy from the practitioner thus giving the patient an active role and ultimate responsibility for their own healing. The energy is then realigned and balanced and harmony is restored in the body.

Though it is not a religion there is a great deal of spirituality at work in Reiki. God or a Universal Life Force is acknowledged and recognized as the source of all life energy. Though there are specific principles involved in Reiki, the actual methods are quite similar to the “laying on of hands” practiced by faith healers of many religious denominations. But “laying on of hands” is not quite the same as “the manipulation of soft tissue” required to be defined as massage.

There are a couple of issues here. First, massage as a stand alone practice, has struggled to be recognized by the medical establishment as a legitimate form of therapy and healing. Under the auspices of physical therapy, massage is readily accepted and practiced to restore muscular function and to assist in the rehabilitative process. However, there is the view by many that massage therapy is somewhat of a “mongrel” healing application with touches of mainstream medicine, alternative medicine, holistic, health, New Age cultism, sexual indulgence and mystical fakery. The simple fact is the “the manipulation of soft tissue” has been proven and is accepted as a healing modality. It is the desire to include any healing avocation that involves touch, or even the close proximity of hand to body, under the heading of massage that creates confusion and causes suspicion.

Scientists and doctors have dismissed Reiki as a placebo that encourages patients to feel better because they are supposed to feel better. Other questions about the motivation of practitioners is the fact that Dr. Usui, the founder of Reiki, determined that there must be an “energy exchange” between Reiki healer and Reiki patient to invest the patient in the healing process. This investment is monetary in most cases and is a core principle of Reiki.

Another problem with Reiki being considered a form of massage is that some states require that practitioners of Reiki be licensed as massage therapists. Many Reiki practitioners dispute this categorization specifically because of the distinction between Reiki and massage as stated in the definitions presented earlier in this article.

So, Reiki has a bit of a schizophrenic personality. On the one hand, courses teaching Reiki are offered in many massage schools. On the other hand, many practitioners themselves don’t consider themselves massage therapists. So, far be it from me to try and settle this dispute in one article. Reiki may or may not be a truly effective form of healing. All I know is that I still have difficulty categorizing Reiki as massage. I think there may be some “manipulation” of the definition of massage required to justify the inclusion of Reiki.

Shopping Help For Aromatherapy Accessories

My childhood memories of aromatherapy are restricted to the beautiful diffusers that my father bought for diffusing the essential oil aroma. Though they were largely clay pot diffusers, they looked attractive in varied colours and shapes.

Diffusers come in the category of aromatherapy accessories. Aromatherapy accessories include the whole range of storage boxes, bottles and jars, diffusers, burners, containers, dispensers etc. Essential oils and other aromatherapy products, being so precious (not exactly in price but in face value to the user), demand special concern in the form of aromatherapy accessories.

Storage box:
It is important to get the best storage boxes for storing your essential oils. Essential oils may get contaminated if exposed to too extreme temperatures. Similarly, direct sunlight is harmful for the aromatherapy products. The most common material used for preparation of storage boxes is alder wood. The boxes will be beautifully carved and given a natural wood finish. When shopping for storage boxes, check that it contain wooden dividers and brass clasp fittings. Also, decide the storage space before making the buying decision.

Bottles and jars:
Essential oils must be stored in dark amber or cobalt blue bottles. These are the best containers to prevent deterioration of the essential oils. Since essential oils are contaminated when exposed to direct sunlight, clear glass bottles are a strict no-no. Plastic bottles may be avoided, particularly when concentrated essential oils are to be stored. It is believed that the oil erodes the plastic and thus it gets deteriorated. The market today has large options for people shopping for bottles and jars. They are available in ranges of 5 ml to 10 ml. Bottles with beautiful designs can be purchased. Some manufacturers also offer the option to design on demand the bottles.

Electric diffusers:
Diffusers are one of the most popular aromatherapy accessories. They are available in a wide range from electric diffusers, nebulizers, fan diffusers, clay pot diffusers etc. They are a cleaner and more effective way of perfuming the environment. Electric diffusers can be left unattended too without the fear of it leading to fire, since there is no naked flame.

Dispensers:
Though dispensers and pipettes are only minor aromatherapy accessories, they are quite important. Use an ordinary dispenser and you have the danger of deteriorating your oils. When oil is dispensed from its container, a part of it is left on the pipette. It reacts with the oxygen outside and gets contaminated. When again the pipette is used, the contaminated oil contaminates the entire bottle of oil. So one must purchase the dispensers too with care.

In this way, we see that aromatherapy accessories have a large role to play in increasing longevity of your essential oils. So, take the same care when buying the aromatherapy accessories as when you buy the oils.

Shilajit

Shilajit is the most powerful anti – aging substance and Rejuvenator ever known to mankind. Feel the Power of Growing Young. The ancient medical literature attributes many health benefits to Shilajit known as “conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness.”

In Sanskrit the literal meaning of Shilajit is ” Rock Like ” – the power to make our body like a rock enabling it to withstand the ravages of time. Shilajit has that unmatched powers of arresting and reversing the aging process .

Shilajit has been used historically for general physical strengthening, anti-aging, blood sugar stabilization, libido, injury healing, urinary tract rejuvenation, enhanced brain functioning potency, bone healing, kidney rejuvenation, immune system Strengthening, arthritis, hypertension, obesity and many other application for numerous conditions.

Shilajit in India, is an aphrodisiac. It is well known that Shilajit would return the libido of people to a level of teenagers. It will keep your Vigor, Vitality and Energy at optimum levels. Shilajit works like Viagra to enhance the effect of nitric oxide to produce an erection. It is also called as “Indian Viagra”.

If you are a Woman, Shilajit will ensure that you stay in your youthful charm for a very very long time. Something which rigorous Diet regime, Physical Exercise and any amount of beauty products cannot ensure.

If you are Man, it will keep your Vigor, Vitality and Energy at optimum levels. Shilajit restores youthful vigor to the entire body.

Shamanic Healing

Shamanic healing describes in essence a group of processes that has been practised throughout the millennia, and throughout every civilisation in the world, which entails for a shaman to travel in non-ordinary realms (quantum realms, other worlds, dreamtime etc) and there, to make changes, learn about the nature of the problem and to bring back resolutions.

Shamanic healing relies at the baseline for any practitioner, or shaman, to be able to contact and understand the underlying “invisible” energetic realities of the world.

Therefore, and although for example soul healing, soul loss and a range of mind healing and incarnational healing activities is what is most commonly associated with shamanic healing, a shaman can also “read plants”, minerals, other forms of energy imprints and match these to the problem at hand.

True shamanic healing is absolutely fascinating and not to be confused with a mind game that used to be played at some length in the “new age communities” of the late 20th century.

The difference between an “imagining” and a true shamanic healing experience is known because it is FELT; further more, when a true shamanic healing experience has taken place, REALITY CHANGES as a result.

For a beginner studying shamanic healing work, it is of the essence to REMAIN REAL at all times.

Humans are easily given to imagination and delusion; and someone who has never experienced an orgasm would probably be hard pushed to explain the difference in the sensations of an orgasm, and a good sneeze.

It is therefore essential for a junior shaman to first of all, learn how to differentiate between what is real and what is just an imagining; this is needed to set the path in the right direction, towards more real experiences and away from disturbing illusions.

The EmoTrance healing system provides this ESSENTIAL assistance at level 1 by focussing on PHYSICAL SENSATIONS related to INVISIBLE occurrences. The body doesn’t lie; and to learn to trust one’s own PHYSICAL responses, to read them correctly and to USE THEM in order to stay on the path of reality and not get lost in illusion is the first lesson, first task of shamanic healing.

In past societies, shamans were put through severe rituals of pain to “ground them in physicality” and to teach them the all important lessons of reality vs illusions; in the EmoTrance healing system, we USE THE EXISTING PAIN of old injuries in the energy system (in the spirit person, in the spirit realms of a human being) to learn these lessons instead – and whilst we do this, we get to HEAL these old wounds at the same time.

This increases the shamans ability to feel, to perceive; it releases their limitations of fear and reversal and it is indeed the first and most important step to moving forward into true shamanic healing at the higher levels of reality.

Serrapeptase

The five healthy volunteers who recently took part in clinical drug trials and sufferred terrible side-effects as a result of the trial were being tested for the treatment of leukaemia and auto-immune and inflammatory diseases.

However mother nature has already provided a naturally occurring, physiological agent with no inhibitory effects called Serrapeptase.

Serrapeptase is an enzyme which was originally discovered in the intestine of the silkworm and used for escaping from its cocoon.

Today it is naturally processed through fermentation and made readily available in supplement form.

Serrapeptase digests non-living tissue, blood clots, cysts, and arterial plaque and inflammation in all forms.

Inflammation in the body is normally an important mechanism for protecting it from attack by invading organisms, faulty cells and trauma. However, when the immune system becomes dysfunctional, it loses its ability to differentiate between innocuous and potentially dangerous substances. This dysfunction results in a wide array of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, allergies, psoriasis, uveitis, multiple sclerosis and some forms of cancer.

In spite of the huge range of successful enzyme studies showing safety and effectiveness, the standard therapy for inflammatory-mediated diseases and trauma include drugs such as steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs). These classes of drugs do in most cases offer temporary, symptomatic relief from swelling, inflammation and accompanying pain, but without treating the underlying condition.

Serratia peptidase (Serrapeptase) was discovered in the early 1970’s and is now in wide clinical use throughout Europe and Asia as a viable alternative to drugs. It has no inhibitory effects on prostaglandins, is devoid of gastrointestinal side effects and offers a sensible alternative to drugs and medication.

Only Enteric coated Serrapeptase tablets have been subject to the research showing excellent results. Capsules (which may not pass the stomach acid) are unlikely to be as effective unless the granules inside the capsule are enteric coated and contain 40,000iu of activity.

Seriousness of allergy rhinitis

What is actually allergy rhinitis? Allergy rhinitis is an allergic disease, which is caused by the sensitinogen that reacting on the mucous membranes in the nasal cavity. It consists two types that are perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis. Perennial allergic rhinitis occurs throughout the year; whereas, seasonal allergic rhinitis usually occurs during the blossoming or flowering season. In this season, plants start to release their pollen for breeding purpose. Pollen is one of the sensitinogens to the allergic rhinitis. Clinical features of allergic rhinitis are; itching in the nose, sneezing, watery nasal discharge and nasal obstruction. There are about 20 % of adults and children have seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis [Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 1986;94:470-5]. Although it is prevalence in most of the countries regardless tropical or seasonal, most of the conditions are not treated adequately and the consequence is that allergic rhinitis becomes chronic. The chronic state of allergic rhinitis usually will lead to more serious complications of the upper and lower airways such as asthma, sinusitis and otitis media with effusion. Otitis media is an inflammation of the middle ear. Fluid is built up in the middle ear and causes temporary lose of hearing. However, if this chronic disease is not treated properly, it may lead to permanent hearing impairment.

A few medical scientists had carried out surveys to study the epidemiologic links between allergic rhinitis and other airway diseases. What they had found out were, 78% of patients who had asthma were also had allergic rhinitis [Allergy 1983;38:25-9]. They also found out that 99% of adults and 93% of adolescents, who had allergic asthma, also had allergic rhinitis [J Allergy Clin Immunol 1997;99:S138]. Besides, the other study that had been carried out for 23 years was found out that college students who previously had allergic rhinitis had three times higher the possibility to have asthma compared to those students who had not had allergic rhinitis before [Allergy Proc 1994;15:21-5].

Many researches and works had been carried out to study the epidemiologic link between allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. The results had been well documented. The earlier study showed that 53% of children, who had allergic rhinitis, also had sinusitis [J Allergy Clin Immunol 1978;61:310-4]. They proved this from the children abnormal sinus radiographs. Whereas, recent study showed that up to 70% of children, who had allergy and chronic rhinitis, had abnormal sinus radiographs [J Allergy Clin Immunol 1988;82:935-40]. 78% of the patients who had recurrent sinus infection, rhinitis allergy was coming together with their extensive sinus disease. For the children who had otitis media with effusion, 40 to 50% of them had allergic rhinitis [J Allergy Clin Immunol 1997;99:S787-97.]. This was confirmed by positive allergy skin tests or increased serum IgE antibodies to specific allergens test.

Scientist had proposed a model for the development of sinusitis and otitis media. Their proposed model assumes that the earliest cause for sinusitis is not bacterial infection but it is due to the obstruction in the nasal cavity, which hinders the normal movement of air and secretions in and out of sinuses. Virus that causes nasal inflammation is upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) type, which is called rhinovirus. Research had been carried out to study the effect of this virus to the nasal diseases. The result showed that when rhinovirus is inoculated into the nasal passage of a group people, one third of these people would develop sinus abnormities and typical sinus disease symptoms [J Allergy Clin Immunol 1992;90:474-8]. Another study also showed that 87% of healthy adult, who voluntarily went through self-diagnosed colds, had maxillary sinuses illness [Engl J Med 1994;330:25-30].

Fluid inside the sinus cavity must be drained normally to keep the nasal healthy. When nasal being infected by bacteria or virus, or exposure to allergen, dust or chemicals, thicken secretion will be developed and it has higher possibility blocks the narrowed sinus ostia (opening that connect to the sinus cavity). Accumulation of these secretions in the sinus cavity will lead to further obstruction, mucosal swelling and also thicken the sinus mucosa. This will create an anaerobic environment that further favorite the bacterial growth and lead to infection. Congested sinus ostia must be resolved if not, it will lead to recurrent acute and eventually chronic nasal disease. This model also explained why chronic sinusitis is resistant to the antimicrobials treatment alone. To treat the sinusitis properly, antihistamines and corticosteroids have to be used as a combination with the antimicrobials treatment.

A similar model had been developed by scientist to explain the occurrence of otitis media with effusion. 83% of the children had at least once occurrence of acute otits media by the time they reach 3 years old [J Infect Dis 1989;160:83-94]. This model hypothesizes that nasal inflammation that is caused by allergens or URTIs virus will further cause inflammatory swelling and obstruction of the Eustachian tube. Obstruction of the Eustachian tube will increase negative pressure in the middle area and without improper ventilation; fluids will accumulate in the middle ear. Obstructed Eustachian tube will open occasionally with an effusion and this will suck the inner nasal secretion, which contain bacteria, virus and allergens into the middle ear cavity. Consequently, this will cause acute bacterial otitis media.

From the information above that have been gathered from various scientific publications, we know that common nasal allergy should not be left untreated. This is because it will lead to obstruction, fluid accumulation, bacterial infection and acute disease. If these diseases are not treated properly or successfully, a chronic state of inflammation, nasal congestion, and sinus infection will be developed and it can cause mucosal damage and ultimately, chronic disease. If the disease spreads to the middle ear, it will cause permanent hearing impairment

Sandalwood Oil

Sandalwood is one of the world’s most widely used essential oils, prized for its scent in perfumery, for its therapeutic effects in Chinese, Ayurvedic and Tibetan medicine systems, and for its ability to center the mind in meditative yogic traditions.

Sandalwood essential oil is most often extracted via steam distillation from the wood of the Sandalwood tree, with the heartwood of the roots producing the highest quality oil. Sandalwood is an evergreen, growing to a height of 9 meters, with leathery leaves and small purple flowers. Native to southern tropical Asia, the tree is parasitic, gaining its nutrients from one of several other tree species. Because it can only be grown this way, and due to its seemingly strict set of environmental conditions, Sandalwood is difficult to propagate. To add to the challenge of successful cultivation, Sandalwood takes nearly 30 years to mature before yielding oil of any worth.

Sandalwood essential oil has a woody, balsamic, sweet and slightly musky aroma; it is a pale yellow, greenish or brownish liquid with excellent tenacity (the aroma tends to last a long time) and superior fixative properties. There are several varieties available, with Santalum album is considered the most important therapeutically. The Mysore region of eastern India is thought to produce the highest quality of this oil type, though its harvesting is creating a strain on the area’s natural environment. Recently, an oil of the austrocaledonia species has been produced on the South Pacific island of Vanuatu from successfully cultivated Sandalwood trees. This oil has a fantastic aroma, with a woody, smoky scent that can remind one of being at the beach – an excellent base note in perfume and cosmetic blends.

In the West, Sandalwood oil is perhaps best known in the west as a natural, woody, sweet body perfume used ‘as is’, or as a familiar aroma in many cosmetics, aftershaves and the like. In the east, however, Sandalwood’s importance in cultural and spiritual traditions cannot be overstated. The wood is carved into furniture, religious icons, used to build temples and burned as incense in a great variety of ceremonies. The oil is used to anoint the dead, helping their transition to the next life. In Burma, women sprinkle it on passersby on the last day of the year for the release of sins. In Hindu marriages, Sandalwood is burned in a tent such that the smoke surrounds the bridal couple. For the meditative yogi, the oil and incense encourage a serene state of mind, supporting alignment of the individual with the universal Self.

In the traditional Indian medicine system of Ayurveda, Sandalwood is valued for it’s ability to cool the fire of pitta. It is indicated for inflammatory conditions, such as inflamed skin, or intestinal and genitor-urinary conditions that require cooling. Modern aromatherapy considers the oil an effective skin care agent for dry skin, general irritation and acne; it can help in cases of bronchitis, catarrh, dry persistent coughs, laryngitis and sore throat; it may relieve diarrhea and nausea, and can be supportive in cases of cystitis.

Beyond the physical body, Sandalwood essential oil is a great tonic for the hyper-active mind. In practical terms, the oil is considered an anti-depressant through it’s ability to relieve hot, agitated emotional states, and to assist in release from over-thinking and worry. More esoterically, the aroma is considered ‘divinely sweet’ and softly balsamic, characteristics which evoke the grounding of the Earth element. It is said to release one from the ‘tyranny of the intellect’ which can cloud one’s true nature, bringing about a more serene state unifying body, mind and spirit. From this quiet, unified state comes forth the true creative mind, finding infinite possibility in the here and now. It is in this peaceful, unified state where meditation can affect profound transformation.

Recommended essential oil blends for calming the mind are as follows – these can be used for general massage, reflexology, or applied to pulse points and temples: For ‘obsessive’ thinking, try four (4) drops of Sandalwood and two (2) drops of Vetiver in one tablespoon of carrier; for a detached analytical state try three (3) drops Geranium, two (2) drops Sandalwood and one (1) drop Patchouli in one tablespoon of carrier. These blends can also be created for use in a diffuser by omitting the carrier oil. For a great perfume also with soothing qualities, combine three parts Sandalwood and two parts Vanilla oil – the blend produces a wonderful tropical island aroma.

Finally, Sandalwood is one of the few essential oils which improves with age. Due to increasing demand, the oil’s price is climbing significantly every year – it can be worthwhile to purchase a little more than you think you’ll need immediately, as storing it for some time will only result in a richer oil in the future. Of course, samples are also a great place to start, as you can first find a Sandalwood that truly suits you.

Rosehip Seed Oil

Rosehip seed oil has become widely recognized as an effective skin and beauty care agent in the last decade, with great interest surrounding its scientifically-validated beauty-enhancing effects. The oil has been heralded as a miracle cure for skin, useful for a great myriad of conditions, from premature aging and sun damage to scarring and other damage. What is this wonderful red liquid, where does it come from, how does it work, and most importantly, can it work for you?

Rosehip seed oil is extracted from the seed within the fruit of the wild thorny rose bush. Native to Chile, the plant is now cultivated elsewhere in South America with many countries producing the oil. Also found under the name ‘Rosa Mosqueta’, the oil has been used by native people for hundreds of years, but only recently became known to the rest of the world.

The red colored oil can be either solvent extracted or ‘cold-pressed’ – pressing is the really way to go, as there is no chance of any solvent residues remaining in the final product, and it is easier on the environment. The cold-pressed oil is the closest to nature; it has a high essential fatty acid content, and is considered more delicate than other seed oils. For this reasons, pure rosehip seed oil should be kept in a cool place, out of direct light, and should be used within 1 year of purchase. Otherwise the more fragile of the fatty acids could begin to turn bad, and your skin might not be so fond of them.

Rosehip seed oil is an excellent source of natural vitamin E and natural vitamin A, or ‘trans-retinoic acid’. Retinoic acid, the acid derivative of vitamin A, is the active ingredient found in Retin-A or Tretinoin. Retin-A (a pharmaceutical preparation) has been heralded as a wrinkle cure because of its ability to increase skin cell proliferation – or speed the time it takes for your skin to regenerate. In fact, rosehip seed oil has been extensively studied for many of the same actions attributed to Retin-A, and has been shown effective without side effects (like over-drying and peeling – though unlike Retin-A, it should not be used to treat acne).

The first major study on rosehip seed oil was performed in 1983 by a team of researchers at the University of Santiago, Chile. The study’s participants included individuals with diverse forms of skin damage: deep wrinkles and other premature aging, UV damage, radiation damage, acne scarring, burn scarring, dermatitis, and other problems of this type. Rosehip seed oil was shown to have significant, noticeable effects in regenerating the skin, reducing wrinkles and scars, and helping the skin to regain its natural color and tone.

Another later study was conducted on women ages 25-35 with extensive premature aging of their skin. Again, rosehip seed oil significantly reduced the appearance of wrinkles and sun spots after daily application for four months. Research has continued on the oil, with one study noting: “On some skin troubles like superficial wrinkles, chestnut spots and ephelides, good results have been obtained. After 16 weeks of treatment, wrinkles and spots become imperceptible.” The oil has been used to successfully treat a long list of skin related conditions, including: age spots, wrinkles and premature aging, sun damage, scars from acne, burns, and surgery, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, hyper-pigmentation, brittle nails, and even dry and damaged hair.

Besides its regenerative properties, rosehip seed oil is also an excellent moisturizer. This is most likely due to its high essential fatty acid content (fatty acids that the body cannot produce itself), which are necessary for healthy skin. The oil penetrates the upper layers of the skin quickly and, being known as a ‘dry’ moisturizer, does not leave the skin feeling greasy or oily.

As for daily use of rosehip seed oil, it is considered extremely gentle and can be applied undiluted to the skin. It may also be blended with other oils like jojoba and sweet almond, and will still have wonderful effects at 10% of the total concentration. Further, rosehip seed oil makes an excellent carrier oil for aromatherapy – blends with essential oils having skin regenerative and soothing properties are highly recommended.

For improvement of scarring, a simple blend of 20 drops of Helichrysum Italicum per 1 ounce of rosehip seed oil, applied daily to the area, can be helpful. Helichrysum is known for its content of regenerative ‘ketones’. For a more luxurious beauty blend, try the following in 4 ounces of rosehip seed:

5 drops Helichrysum
5 drops Lavender
3 drops Sandalwood
3 drops Neroli
3 drops Carrot Seed
3 drops Geranium
2 drops Roman Chamomile
2 drops Jasmine
1 drop Palmarosa
1 drop Ylang Ylang

Even simply the Helichrysum and Lavender will go a long way – Lavender oil is very gentle, and is also known to have regenerative properties.

So, whether using rosehip seed oil for healing your skin, or simply giving it a little nourishment, you will almost certainly be happy with the results. This luscious oil, with its broad range of positive effects, is sure to take a prominent place in your natural beauty botanical collection.

Rolfing

ROLFING works with the connective tissue. Connective tissue wraps the body entirely, much like a wet suit does a swimmer. It wraps each muscle and muscle fiber in a continuous network, even supplying the internal membranes that wrap our bones and support our internal organs.

We all hold tension and stress in our bodies. You may feel it in your head, neck, shoulders and back most often. The stress may come from physical trauma like an auto collision, a fall or maybe surgery. It may be generated by life situations such as divorce, moving, abuse or a death in the family.

So what is ROLFING? To say that ROLFING is a technique for physically aligning and standing the body upright in gravity in 10 sessions somehow misses the point. For me, ROLFING is Dorothy, aged 67, a polio victim at three and surgery at 12, free of back pain and able to walk up and down stairs in a normal manner for the first time in 30 years.

ROLFING is Joyce, a 35 year-old attorney who says, “my shoulder and neck pain are gone, and the greatest surprise is my new attitude and positive outlook on life.” ROLFING is an Olympic medalist in gymnastics who had lived with the pain of working out and performing with bones broken and muscles torn in childhood, saying, “my back is better, the pain is gone and I feel better.”

The body responds to stress by tightening and shortening. Most people can identify the muscular body tightening associated with momentary stress. We say we ?hold ourselves together.? What most of us miss is how the yearly accumulations of day by day tightening and tension are locked into the body and affect our overall health. A distortion in one part of the dynamic system affects the total system. A hurt back, knee or neck might cause us to favor that area. Since we live in the field of gravity and are constantly struggling to hold ourselves upright our initial favoring can become a chronic imbalance and a limited movement pattern.

Physical approaches to dealing with stress and imbalance in the body have been around for a while. ROLFING is one of the earliest and most profound of the manipulation techniques; it is the most structured and developed system of “deep tissue work”. Rolfing’s premise is that the body’s organ of structure is the fascia; and that life is an ongoing encounter with gravity, the force that is always with us.

Dr. Ida Rolf (she called it Structural Integration, her followers called it ROLFING), said:

“One individual may experience his losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in the back, another as the unflattering contour of his body, another as constant fatigue, and yet another as an unrelentingly threatening environment. Those over 40 may call it old age, yet all these signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structure and the structure of others, that it has been ignored; they are off balance. They are all at war with gravity.”

Rolfing is also my 72 year old Uncle — who at 72 was still teaching tennis and golf despite chronic pain in his neck, shoulder and heels — standing upright in the kitchen telling my wife he still thought ROLFING was strange, but somehow it worked, he was no longer in pain.

Role of Alternative Medicine in modern society

Typically, alternative medicine differs from traditional medicine in that alternative medicine is older and what we might call unconventional or non-Western medicine. Alternative medicine does not follow the traditional science and research that current medicines undergo. Alternative medicine could also be termed complementary or traditional medicine or the therapies that can be integrated into current medicine. The staff of the National Library of Medicine of the United States classified alternative medicine under the category of complementary therapies in their Medical Subjects Heading Section. This was done in the year 2002. The definition provided was that alternative medicine therapeutic practices were not considered as an integral part of the traditional allopathic medicine. Therapies like acupuncture, dieting, physical therapy like exercises or yoga, etc. are termed as alternative medicine. These therapies are called complementary when they are used along with conventional treatments. If they are done in place of conventional treatments, they are known as alternative treatments.

In April 1995, the panel of National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, worked on Definition & Description, CAM Research Methodology Conference, Office of Alternative Medicine. The panel defined alternative medicine and complementary medicine as those healing resources that encompass all health systems and practices that are different from the dominant health system of a particular society or culture. Usually, therapies like ayurveda, herbal medicine, folk medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, diet practices, chiropractic, music therapy, massage, pranic healing, etc. are classified as alternative or complementary medicine. People who do not find a cure, remedy or success in allopathic medicine generally try alternative medicine. Such people generally suffer from cancer, arthritis, acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS), chronic back pain, etc. Therapies included under alternative medicine would cease to be included in that category once their efficacy is proven and they are considered safe and effective. They are then considered as part of traditional medicine. An example would be chiropractors. Twenty years ago insurance would not pay for them as they were considered “alternative and ineffective.” Today thousands of people have been helped by chiropractors and they are now recognized in the medical community. A similar movement is underway in the nutritional supplement and nutraceutical industry.

Over the years, more and more people have been using alternative medicine because traditional medicine is not working for them. The 2004 survey by the National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine of the United States revealed that approximately 36% of Americans used alternative medicine in 2002. If alternative medicine is used in conjunction with traditional allopathic medicine, an integrative doctor is a person’s best option. Some traditional doctors are adamantly against or simply do not believe in complementary medicine, even though research continues to show the benefits of many compounds. Your doctor should be informed about other approaches you may be using and if they are not comfortable with that then always feel free to choose another doctor. This would enable the doctor to foresee any possible complications or a better time in which to use a complementary therapy. The concern in using alternative medicine stems from the fact that some practitioners of alternative medicine do not have an accredited medical degree and therefore do not have a valid medical license. However, in recent times, many educational institutions and universities have started offering courses in homeopathy, ayurveda, siddha, unani, acupuncture, and naturopathy. The recent growth in this industry is evident by the many people demanding different, and in some cases better, care than what they are receiving in “modern medicine.” They are no longer accepting the fact that they need to suffer with pain or illness because modern pharmacy does not have a magic bullet for them.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Treated with Alternative Medicine

If you have rheumatoid arthritis you may have often thought about seeking an alternative health practitioner, but have not known how to approach the matter. You may be considering alternative medicine now for your arthritis, because you have been treated unsuccessfully for years by conventional medicine.

Having been treated for rheumatoid arthritis over a lengthy period your condition may be rather advanced, that is not to say that alternative medicine would be unable to treat it, but rather the treatment would be slow and steady in order to avoid any aggravation of your arthritis.

Unfortunately patients often expect fast results from their chosen alternative practitioner, however, this will most certainly not be the case, for years of taking prescription drugs will have more than likely left you in a debiliated condition.Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with prescription drugs fails to treat the cause of your disease, it only treats symptoms, this results in suppression, and you spend the rest of your life with intermittent flare-ups and exacerbations of your disease with no cure ever in sight.

Rheumatoid arthritis is considered to be an auto-immune disease, with an unknown cause. This diagnosis rather absolves you of all responsibility for your disease, having received your diagnosis you then proceed unquestioningly to commence a regime of potent drugs for your rheumatoid arthritis without doing any research on the disease yourself.

Have you ever asked why your immune system has decided to attack you, rather than protect you? If you gave this some serious thought you might decide to make some lifestyle changes in order to help your immune system regain it’s innate intelligence. You may ask what lifestyle changes you might have to make in order to regain your health. Basically there really is only one change, and that is your diet. The answer is simple, eat fresh organic fruits and vegetables, eliminate fast foods, highly processed foods, aspartame, MSG, saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, cigarettes, alcohol, diet sodas, and all other sodas.

If you would prefer to keep your rheumatoid arthritis, your junk diet and prescription drugs then that’s your choice and you will undoubtedly pay for your choice with lifelong sickness. However, if you make the effort to change your diet you will reap the benefits, and you will be richly rewarded with vibrant health.

Restless Leg Syndrome and Supplements

Restless Legs Syndrome is a condition that affects about ten percent of the population. The disorder is characterized by an urge to move the legs, usually accompanied by or caused by uncomfortable leg sensations. People with RLS often have difficulty describing their symptoms. Common terms used to describe the sensations are aching, twitching, tingling, burning, creeping, crawling, itching, flowing, pulling, searing and painful. Many people experience these sensations in their legs, but the arms or other body regions also can be affected. The symptoms of RLS are generally worse at night, can be brought on by rest and are relieved by standing up or walking around.

MY STORY

I, too, suffer from RLS occasionally. I’ve had periods of my life where the condition seemed to worsen (probably stress-related). Some of the following suggestions may work for you, for others maybe not. For me, the lifestyle changes I made to help with my insomnia also helped with my RLS. I still have a sleepless night or a night with RLS, but they are far less frequent. Although www.natural-cures-for-insomnia.com does not endorse drug use, there are new drugs available for extreme cases of RLS when nothing else works.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS

Treatment begins by dealing with any underlying medical condition that may be cause the symptoms. Many times the cause is unknown, but it can be associated with neurological disorders, diabetes, stress and pregnancy. The serious sleep loss can not only lead to drowsiness, but could lead to depression and accidental injuries as well. In recent years, researchers have discovered that iron, folate or vitamin E levels are often low in RLS sufferers and supplementation can frequently help. For example, when iron deficiency is the cause, taking iron supplements can significantly reduce the symptoms of RLS.

“We know that iron deficiency is involved because every condition that produces iron deficiency, such as anemia or pregnancy, increases the risk of RLS dramatically,” says Richard Allen, PhD, a diplomat on the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a founder of the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center. In fact, based on studies of hospital patients, about 40 percent of people with anemia had RLS and about 20 percent to 40 percent of pregnant women have RLS.

Another way researchers know that iron plays a role is iron-deficient patients’ response to iron supplementation. “Then when the iron deficiency is corrected, the RLS often remits,” Dr. Allen says.

Some people with RLS, however, have normal iron levels. Researchers say that’s not a reason to discount iron as an underlying cause of their RLS. Studies indicate that the problem is the brains of RLS patients may not absorb iron normally.

Some other treatment options which may relieve pain include leg massages, hot baths, heat or icepacks, aspirin or other over-the-counter pain relievers, and the elimination of caffeine. As well, regular sleep habits and exercise, especially earlier in the day, will help people enjoy more restful sleep.

MAGNESIUM AND CALCIUM

Cramps in the lower limbs, restless leg syndrome and sleeplessness can be eased by the addition of calcium and magnesium to the diet. Magnesium is more easily absorbed by the body in the form of dolomite, or with the addition of calcium.

Magnesium helps to support a strong immune system and maintains normal muscle and nerve function. It is also known to be involved in every metabolism and protein synthesis and is needed for over three hundred biochemical reactions in the body, so it is very important.

One of the benefits of magnesium is its muscle relaxing properties. The heart is a muscle and high blood pressure is often caused by the heart not relaxing sufficiently on its outward (diastolic) beat. There is increasing interest in the role magnesium can play in managing hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

WHAT TO AVOID

You should avoid things that can make symptoms of RLS worse:

Tobacco
Alcohol
Caffeine—Chocolate, coffee, tea, and some soft drinks contain caffeine. Although it may seem to help overcome daytime sleepiness, caffeine usually only delays or masks RLS symptoms, and often makes them worse.
Some types of over-the-counter and prescription medicines can also make RLS symptoms worse. These include:
Anti-depressants (most of them)
Anti-nausea medicines
Anti-psychotic medicines
Antihistamines
Good supplements to take are iron, folic acid, co-enzyme Q10, extracts of ginko biloba and garlic tablets.

Acupuncture and magnet therapy are also worth trying to help with restless legs syndrome.

If you are taking prescription medication, always consult your health care professional before taking supplements.

Remedial Massage Therapy

Are you suffering from occasional migranes due to your stiff neck?

Are you having back ache problems due to long hours at the computer and no time to exercise?

Are you having muscle aches and have problems even lying down to sleep?

Instead of resorting to drugs and medication, a good alternative to try is remedial massage therapy. Remedial massage is a holistic treatment; that is, a treatment for the whole of the body, as well as the area being treated.

Remedial massage uses several specialized skills to locate and repair damage and speed up the body’s repair mechanism. A professional remedial massage therapist has to draw on his knowledge of anatomy, physiology, related pathology and the techniques of Swedish massage, heat and cold therapies, Kinesthetics and many other related fields for a complete treatment.

Also, the professional massage therapist will use information about your lifestyle, being your food diet, exercise regime, medical history, etc. for diagnosis.

Remedial massage can involve gentle to strong strokes as well as shallow to deep strokes. It works on the fact that soft muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia is responsive to touch. Sensitive points in the muscles often refer to pain in other parts of the body. For instance, headaches may originate from muscles in the neck and pelvic pains can be caused by certain areas in the abdominal and pelvic area. Remedial massage helps to stimulate blood flow in these areas, thus reducing pain, swelling and pain, and speeding up the body’s natural healing process.

Remedial massage is one of the most effective and natural treatment for stress related conditions. Balance is ultimately restored to your body system when your body parts are functioning optimally. You feel a sense of renewal and more energized that ever before!

Relieve Migraine Headaches the Natural Way

Natural treatment methods for migraine headaches are usually harmless and cheaper than traditional pain medications. Sure, it is possible to have negative reactions to natural treatments, but the chances are much less than with medications.

Different things work for different people. No two people are alike and a headache treatment method that works for one person may not work for another. But on the contrary, just because one method does not work for someone else does not mean it will not relieve your migraine headaches. There are many alternatives to taking medications when it comes to migraine headache relief. One may be just what you need.

Chiropractic adjustments are surely the most popular form of natural headache relief. Patients with migraine headaches have been visiting chiropractors for decades, and with very good success. As many as 80% or more of headache patients find relief with chiropractic care. Spinal problems do cause headaches and chiropractors do an outstanding job of correcting spinal problems.

Biofeedback is a training program designed to help a person develop the ability to control their autonomic (involuntary) nervous system. After learning the technique it is then possible for a person to control their heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and of course, the relaxation of their muscles.

Muscle tension can cause headaches and by relaxing muscles, especially in the neck, it is possible to relieve migraine headaches. Once the technique is learned there is no longer any need for the biofeedback equipment. The patient with migraine headaches can now produce the desired effect any time they wish.

Sometimes too much salt can cause headaches. And by simply lessening the salt intake headaches can sometimes be prevented.

Some migraine headaches are caused by food sensitivities. Certain foods can cause migraines and eliminating these foods can prevent migraine pain. Some common foods that can trigger migraine headaches are cheese, alcohol, monosodium glutamate (a food additive), nuts, beans, caffeine, chocolate, onions and others.

A very common cause of many tension headaches and migraine headaches is just plain old stress. People that get tense experience headaches from the increased tension.

Relieving tension can often relieve migraine headaches. Tension can be relieved in many ways such as by taking a warm bath or shower, lying down in a quiet dark room to rest, putting something cold on the back of the neck (at the base of the skull) or having someone massage your neck muscles and possibly your temporal region to help relieve your tension and muscle spasms.

There are many other natural treatments available to migraine headache patients including the Soothe-A-Ciser Migraine Headaches Cushion. This pillow was designed by a chiropractor to help correct neck problems that can cause headaches.

All of the above treatment methods for migraine headaches are considered safe. However, it is always a good idea to talk with your doctor before attempting to treat yourself for a health problem.

Relax With Aromatherapy Massage Oils

After a hectic day at work, your husband complains of every part of his body aching with pain. Will a good night’s sleep refresh him for the next hectic day? Not necessarily. With a similar schedule each day, he is adding to his pain, which within time will transform into a fatal disease. You being a caring wife, will you want this chain of events to continue? If no, then aromatherapy massage oils are for you.

Aromatherapy massage oils will go a long way in giving the much-needed relief to a person after a long day at work. Massage is both physically and emotionally stimulating for the body. When the massage is supplemented with essential oils, the person gains from the synergistic influences of a calm mind and a radiant skin.

Aromatherapy massage oils may be used in two ways. Inhale the massage oil vapours, which refresh your mind too. Alternatively, apply it to the skin. This method ensures that the massage oils are directly absorbed by the body from where they reach the blood stream. This has impact on one’s health and skin.

After a massage with aromatherapy massage oils, one actually feels splendid. These oils have been known to have special therapeutic qualities. This finds them large-scale use in healing common diseases like cold, flu, pain in the muscles, headache etc.

For the purpose of massage, people often mix more than one essential oil to give the desired effect. The most common of these is the lavender, clary sage and lemon blend. It is known as the stress blend. The essential oils in concentrated form can be dangerous for use. Therefore, aromatherapy massage oils are mixed with carrier oils before applying it on the body. Similarly, one can prepare an aphrodisiac blend with essential oils of sandalwood and jasmine. Just have an idea of what purpose the aromatherapy massage oils will be used for and go on with the blending.

Aromatherapy massage oils are used largely in spas and physical and mental healing centres. Trained masseurs will help you in relieving stress and give you an ecstatic feeling.

If you want, you can also get massaged in your home. Massaging your loved one with fragrant aromatherapy massage oils is the best way to convey the concern for him or her. Aromatherapy massage is also recommended for the infants to give them a glossy skin and strong bones.

Aromatherapy massage oils work wonders with your skin and provide mental calmness. It is also used as a cure from several diseases.

Reiki for Your Stress Reduction

Have you ever heard the word Reiki?

If you want to get rid of stress that you may experience after work, Reiki is the answer to your problem. With this, you will feel a different form of relaxing and soothing comfort.

Reiki is greatly different from Yoga, even though both of them have the same main goal of promoting healing, relaxation and stress reduction. It also uses a different form of acquiring the so-called unseen life force energy.

The technique was first introduced in Japan. It is simply initiated through the laying on hands wherein the unseen energy flows into the person’s body that relieve them from stress and making them feel invigorated.

The Reiki technique believes that if the internal energy that transpires in a person’s body is low, he is more likely to suffer from different kinds of illnesses. On the other hand, if it is high, it only manifests an active and healthy life for a person.

After a client undergoes this kind of healing, he will feel a glowing radiance inside and outside his body. A treated person will take things easily because it will heal the entirety of their being. It includes healing of a person’s body, emotions, mind and spirit.

One of the advantages of Reiki is that it complements other forms of treatment. Reiki is often administered to lessen the side effects and symptoms that have been brought about by a person’s illness.

At present, several clients have already made testimonies about the effectiveness of the Reiki treatment. It has already cured them and has done a miraculous healing. This paves the way for Reiki healing to be patronized by other people.

Reiki Does it Concern Religion

The very essence of Reiki is healing using natural methods, but it does not concern any religion or cult at all. This is with firm conviction that even though Reiki is spiritual in nature, it does not advocate any kind of belief.

Faith here depends on the person’s individual capability of believing on the effectiveness of Reiki towards him. There is no particular teaching or Dogma that you must learn in order to be cured by Reiki.

Most people just associate Reiki with God because of the unexplainable healing process and effect that it provides them after undergoing the treatment. This is probably due to a certain therapeutic technique and Divine intervention that heals them. Like in any other form of healing, it is only natural to ask for God’s guidance.

The term Reiki is derived from the Japanese term “Rei”, which means God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power. The name itself suggests about the participation of the guidance of God in healing but does not necessarily imply that it is a religion. The “Ki” also means life force energy. To join and decipher this two terms, it simply means ‘spiritually guided life force energy.’

Reiki is already proven effective in curing people through all walks of life. The goal of Reiki is to make people realize that in healing ones spirit, he should possess all the willingness and commitment since it is a part of the healing experience.

To establish a lasting effect of the Reiki treatment, the client must do his responsibilities by participating in all the activities that he need to take part in the healing process. It should be a collaborative effort between the healer and the client.

Reiki as an Alternative Healing Process

Maybe you are not familiar with Reiki, don’t worry, you are not alone.

To start with, Reiki is associated with natural holistic healing or a healing where pharmaceutical drugs and medical surgeries are just an alternative in case the system of holistic healing fails.

Reiki is an early form of energy healing in which a participant serves as a channel for Universal Life Force. The Reiki participant opens himself/herself as a channel for an energy that comes from a higher source to aid healing or correct a person’s aura. This is believed to be beneficial for the body, mind, and soul or the Indian system called chakra.

Reiki got its principle from the thought that the universe has an energy that gives form, structure, and health. This force is also called Chi by the Chinese martial artists. It is said to be capable of healing anything because its energy comes from the basic fundamental levels of reality.

It also teaches that the energy flows are affected by the thoughts of a Reiki practitioner. For instance, if he/she thinks of negative things, this will manifest diseases and unfortunate events. If he/she thinks the other way around, good health and fortune will come. These are facilitated to help the patients believe whatever positive thoughts they have in their minds.

To have an idea of how the healing process is conducted, here is an example: usually, the healer performs some hand rituals and eventually places it over a sick person. Then he will perform some massage from mid hair, and he will make some scooping actions like he is smoothing a bedspread. This movement is intent to correct the person’s aura. There are other Reiki masters that just place their hands directly to the patient and keeping it there as long as necessary.

They are also capable of healing from a distance, or also called Reiki remote healing. The healer will just ask for an object that will represent the ill person and they will treat that said object just like he is treating the person. They are also capable of healing and blessing objects such as cars and computers.

Reiki is definitely a different healing process compared with others. It is up to you if you will believe in their methods.

Reiki

Nowadays, the interest in alternative medicine is growing rapidly. Among the vast number of healing modalities available, we find that Reiki has become increasingly popular around the world, especially since science has verified the existence of the universal life energy that Reiki is based on. Reiki is a powerful holistic healing system; it heals on all levels, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

So what is Reiki? The term Reiki is the Japanese word for Universal Life Force Energy. It is a very simple and easily acquired healing method that uses universal life energy, the energy which permeates our entire universe and all living things. This universal life energy is called qi or chi in China, prana in India, and ki in Japan and this is where the Reiki name derives. It circulates throughout the body and in an energy field surrounding the body. This energy field, long been known to healers and mystics, is now verified by scientists. Recent scientific experiments have verified the existence of this life force energy. Scientists have proven that everything in the universe, at a sub-atomic level, is made up of energy. Health is the harmonious flow of life energy, while imbalances in this flow, due to unhealthy habits or negative emotions lead to illness. So this subtle energy is responsible for the processes in our body on all levels: physical, emotional and mental. Reiki channels universal life energy through the hands of the practitioner into the body of the receiver and balances the energy flow in the body.

Reiki is a holistic healing system, meaning that it addresses the whole person: the physical, mental, emotional and the spiritual levels. The body is not made up of isolated parts to be fixed, like a machine; there are no separate parts, but an amazing web of energy, and in order to truly return to health, all the levels of our being must be addressed.

Reiki works on four different levels:

The physical level: Reiki strengthens the immune system. It helps in relieving pain. It balances and harmonizes the function of glands and organs. It heals by opening the blocked energy channels, the meridians, and balances the chakras. When performed regularly, toxins are removed from the body and good health and well-being is maintained.

The emotional level: One of the greatest healing benefits of Reiki is stress reduction and relaxation, which strengthens the immune system and maintains health. People who are depressed or do not feel emotionally balanced begin to feel more stable and relaxed because Reiki clears energy blockages and suppressed emotions.

The mental level: Through giving yourself Reiki, you obtain more clarity and find it easier to overcome obstacles and achieve goals. You become more positive and reach a different outlook on life. You feel more empowered.

The spiritual level: Reiki enables you to go deeper within and feel more connected to your higher self. It aids meditation, increases intuition and provides limitless benefits of spiritual growth.

Reiki is so simple yet so powerful, and this is what makes it a unique healing system that anyone can learn, because it does not require any previous experience or special ability. The Benefits of Reiki are infinite. It allows you to take an active part in your own wellness, and accelerates your growth on all levels.

Reduce Pimples

A SCENE FROM “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” where Professor Sprout, the herbology professor, asks the students to collect “bubutober pus” during a lesson to give to Madam Pomfrey, the school nurse:

“This’ll keep Madam Pomfrey happy,” said Professor Sprout, stoppering the last bottle with a cork. “An excellent remedy for the more stubborn forms of acne, bubutober pus. Should stop students resorting to desperate measures to rid themselves of pimples.”

“Like poor Eloise Midgen,” said Hannah Abbott, a Hufflepuff, in a hushed voice. “She tried to curse hers off.”

“Silly girl,” said Professor Sprout, shaking her head. “But Madam Pomfrey fixed her nose back in the end.”

Admit it—haven’t we all tried to pull off an Eloise Midgen and resorted to drastic measures to drive acne away? While we may not have the capabilities to curse pimples off our faces, there’s certainly a long list of worse ways to remove acne.

What exactly causes acne? While it is true that stress, cosmetics and detergents (such as harsh shampoos and toothpaste) aggravate acne, they are not the direct sources of your pimples. They will only make worse an already existing condition. And do not blame your diet—chocolate and French fries will not cause acne—or your crush for the huge blemish on your nose. They have nothing to do with it at all.

Hormonal imbalance

The usual culprit behind acne is an imbalance of hormones, which causes the production of extra sebum and therefore, pimples. This could be because of your genes (if your parents were pimply in their childhood, you know who to blame) or other circumstances that could lead to this imbalance—puberty, menopause, pregnancy and monthly periods among them. So if you have a friend who has effortlessly clear skin, curse the genetic lottery and take better care of your skin instead of trying to imitate his/her (lack of) routine.

While others go directly to the source and have hormone treatments in order to lessen their acne, this can be costly and impractical in minor acne cases—sort of like swatting a fly with a nuclear bomb. Some treatments, like birthcontrol pills, have undesirable side effects such as weight gain and headaches. The more dangerous side effects include clots in blood vessels and an increased risk of breast cancer. Males who take birth-control pills suddenly find themselves saddled with a pair of breasts (while some do this intentionally, that’s an entirely different story.)

A good skincare regimen will not only prevent more pimples from popping up, but will delay the onset of wrinkles and freckles. Simply washing your face just doesn’t do anymore. In our more polluted environment, you will have to learn how to cleanse, tone and moisturize your skin at least once a day. Applying sunscreen even when you’re not going out in the sun is also important because indoor lights also contain skin-harming rays. So if you’re planning to spend extended hours in front of the computer for a term paper, make sure you’ve slathered on some SPF.

Old staple

If you’re really going for a direct treatment of the pimple, you might want to check out an old staple: Benzoyl Peroxide.

However, Benzoyl Peroxide apparently isn’t just a spot treatment. According to Dr. Bernadette Arcilla of the Philippine Dermatological Society, when faced with acne, you should treat the entire affected area with Benzoyl Peroxide, but don’t overdo it! Too much of it (say, a huge dollop on top of the blemish) will dry out not just the pimple, but the surrounding skin as well, causing more damage. “The best way to apply it is to spread it evenly over the affected area, so that not only will the pimple dry out, but future breakouts will be prevented as well,” Dr. Arcilla said.

Before buying a tube of treatment, said Dr. Arcilla, take note of the concentration of Benzoyl Peroxide before applying it—PanOxyl, for example, has three variants: 2.5 percent for mild acne, 5 percent for moderate acne and 10 percent for severe cases. The latter is best left for body acne, such as pimples on your back and chest, while facial acne is adequately treated by the less concentrated variants. Again, overdoing anything will cause more harm than good so always start with a smaller concentration.

Dr. Arcilla also advised patients to use medication daily—not just on a pimple, but on the entire affected area. “You should treat the skin, not the pimples. Pimples are just a symptom of something bigger,” Dr. Arcilla said. “And if you treat it early, you can prevent scarring due to more blemishes.”

Instead of treating just the surface, go for an acne management program. In the long-term process (which combines a good skincare regimen and acne treatment), pimples won’t be gone in a week, but there is a significant 30- to 40-percent reduction of acne in one to two months. The process can be expedited with the help of your dermatologist, who can help you create an acne management program for yourself. This does take a lot more time than quick fix-acne treatments, but the results are permanent, at least.

Now, isn’t that better than cursing pimples off your face?

Reduce Acid Reflux or Heartburn

Heartburn and acid reflux are typically treated with over the counter products or drugs that reduce stomach acid or block the excretion of stomach acid. It would appear that if our stomach acid needed to be diluted by antacids, our body would be smart enough not produce such a corrosive liquid in our stomach.

That fact is that we need a highly acidic condition in our stomach to properly digest protein. Using drugs to suppress this stomach acid is not the correct way to deal with acid reflux or heartburn. If you do go this route, you will be facing many disease as you get older.

There are many reasons you might have acid reflux. One reason is a weakness in the Lower Esophageal Sphincter valve, LES. LES is a valve between your stomach and your esophagus. When your LES valve is weak, it can allow acidified, partially digested food to flow back up into your esophagus. The acid in the food will burn the lining of your esophagus causing the so called “heartburn…”

Here are some natural steps that you can use to strengthen your Lower Esophageal Sphincter valve:

These foods can weaken the LES valve – coffee, peppermint, spearmint, sugar, chocolate, onions, and alcohol. Once you have strengthened your LES, you can return to eating these foods in moderate amounts.

Eliminate those foods that are known to create allergic reactions such as cow’s milk, wheat, white flour, diary products, and other foods.

Avoid overeating and having a large amount of food in your stomach. Excess food in your stomach can increase your stomach gas pressure and force your LES valve to open.

Avoid using certain drugs, although this might be impossible. If you take drugs perhaps you can start looking for and start using some natural remedies so that you can lessen the use of drugs. Here are some of the drugs at cause LES problems – NSAID’s, bronchodilators, channel blockers, beta-blockers, antianxiety drugs, and nitroglycerine. These drugs relax the muscles around the LES valve causing them to open during normal stomach gas pressures.

Watch how you do certain physical activities, such as waist bending, staining during bowel movements, coughing, and lifting heavy objects. This increases the pressure in the stomach, causing the LES valve to open.

After a meal do not lie down. This causes food to flow back towards the LES valve putting pressure on it. So it is a good reason to eat your last meal around three hours before bedtime.

There you have it, some natural remedies and activities that strengthen or weaken your LES valve. Just applying some or all these will result in reducing the frequency of your acid reflux and heartburn.

Reduce Stomach Gas The Natural Way

Are there natural ways to reduce the gas you pass? Try preventive measures first. Learn how to move gas through your intestines more readily.

While there are several reasons you may find yourself to be gassy, there are many solutions for reducing belching, flatulence, abdominal bloating and pain. Excess gas commonly is associated with irritable bowel syndrome. Other serious gastrointestinal disorders usually produce other symptoms besides just being “gassy.”

Doctors usually recommend a plan to help move gas through the intestines more readily, combined with preventive measures, such as eliminating certain foods from your diet and avoiding chewing gum. Although many products on store shelves promise to help, their success is not guaranteed and often depends on the individual. There are also prescription medicines and some alternative therapies.

Keeping a diary of the foods and beverages you consume can help you systematically eliminate one food or group of foods at a time to determine which may be most responsible for your symptoms. One of the first questions at the top of the list would be ‘Could this be related to dairy products?’. If it is, the first step should be to eliminate these products from your diet for about seven days. If you feel better, then try to add dairy products back to your diet in smaller amounts to see if you can tolerate them.

There are some recommended home remedies and lifestyle changes. Chew more slowly and thoroughly because gas can be a sign of undigested food, the enzymes in saliva begin the first stage of breaking down food in the body’s absorption process. Avoid foods you know cause indigestion. Common food sources of gas include Brussels sprouts, bran, beans, milk products, cabbage, artificial sweeteners, carbonated beverages and alcohol. Take a short walk after you eat to prevent gas accumulation.

Maintaining a regular exercise schedule in the form of walking, jogging and calisthenics will help stimulate the passage of gas through the digestive tract. Perform chest-to-knee stretches. Lying on your back, bring your right knee to your chest. Hold for 10 seconds and, then repeat with the other knee.

If those remedies don’t provide relief, your doctor may recommend that you take an over-the-counter antacid, activated charcoal, or a lactase or bismuth product.

Antacids contain aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide (known as Milk of Magnesia), calcium carbonate, or other ingredients individually or in various combinations. Antacids help to control the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, a condition in which the stomach’s juices (acid and digestive enzymes) flow backward, or reflux, into the esophagus.

Tablets of activated charcoal may provide relief from gas in the colon. Studies have shown that when taken before and after a meal, lower-intestinal gas is reduced.

However, activated charcoal can cause black stools and constipation. While these are harmless side effects, black stools can be confusing to a physician, because color changes in stool can be a sign of a serious illness. Evidence concerning the benefit of activated charcoal is contradictory. Its effect in alleviating symptoms of intestinal gas has been supported by some studies yet refuted by others. As a result, physicians may recommend that patients consider trying activated charcoal to see whether its use results in some symptom relief. The usual dose is two to four tablets taken just before eating and one hour after meals.

Gas is often a symptom of lactose intolerance, which makes digesting dairy products difficult. It occurs when the body has too little of the enzyme lactase in the small intestine to break down lactose, the main sugar in milk and milk-based products. Although lactose intolerance can happen at any age, it tends to affect most people as they grow older. Lactase comes in liquid or tablet form. Adding a few drops to milk before drinking or chewing lactase tablets just before eating helps people who have difficulty breaking down lactose.

Bismut has salts to relieve inflammatory conditions of the stomach and intestines and can sometimes relieve gas. It also reduces the odor of unpleasant smelling gas caused by hydrogen sulfide, a sulfur-containing compound. Like activated charcoal, bismuth may result in black stools. Take before or after meals, on either an empty or full stomach.

In summary, stomach and intestinal gas is normal. Excess gas can be distressing, but rarely is it caused by a serious medical disorder. If your symptoms cannot be easily controlled or you have additional problems such as abdominal pain, change in bowel habits, or rectal bleeding, you need to contact your doctor’s office.

Rediscover Your Erection With Levitra

Body contact for two minutes doesn’t mean to have sex. It is a natural urge and unless one is fully satisfied, the act remains uncompleted. Unable to provide sexual satisfaction to your partner shows that you are immature about sex. Having discussed the subject with numerous men and women about sex, it has been found that the first image that came to their mind is two people engaged in a hot and passionate contact for a prolonged time. Apart from touching and fondling each other your partner seeks a long time intimacy during the act and for this a perfect penile erection is a must. So if you are not experiencing a prolonged erection during a sexual act become serious about it. You may be suffering from some sexual dysfunction.

But thanks to today’s medical science for Levitra a perfect medicine for treating sexual dysfunction effectively. It is a medicine especially formulated for the treatment of defective penile erection. It comes in 2.5mg, 5mg 10mg and 20mg tablets. FDA trails have proved it to be a perfect treatment for erectile dysfunction found in men.

Levitra increases the blood flow into the penis. The active substance Verdenafil HCL in Levitra works by stimulating the nerves present in the penis by blocking the PDE-5 enzyme that control the blood flow into the penis.

Clinical trails have found that most men have been able to resume their sexual life successfully after its first use. It is generally taken about an hour before sex for it begins to show its power between 30 -60 mins of its intake. A dose a day is enough to give a full and prolonged erection throughout a sexual activity. Remember, Levitra is not an aphrodisiac i.e. a substance to give to give sexual arousal all the time.

Though clinical trails have recorded some side affects like headache, constipation and stuffy or runny nose but are found to be tolerated and reversible. However, visiting a doctor is recommended for the perfect dose and its usage.

Purity Ensured through Pure Essential Oils

Scholars in English grammar would be livid at the phrase pure essential oils. For them essential oils are by nature pure and adding the expression ‘pure’ to this is nothing but being verbose. Leave apart the criticism of the scholars, in practice one can regularly come along instances when the essential oils have been mixed with other oils or the customer has been duped with entirely synthetically manufactured oil. So, now you will appreciate the concern for people when they demand pure essential oils.

For the beginners, let us first elucidate about what essential oils are. An essential oil is extracted from different parts of the plant such as stem, leaves, flower, bark etc. You name a plant and an essential oil derived from it will be available. The list of essential oils is really impressive. Some of the most common essential oils include lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus, rose, jasmine, cedar wood and so on. These are derived from a complex process of distillation through water or steam. Certain essential oils like rose leave a fragrant water after the distillation process. This is available in the market as hydrosols. Other hydrosols include lavender water and orange blossom water.

Pure essential oils have been proved to have benevolent effect on human beings. Several adverse conditions can be treated through the proper use of essential oils. The most common of these is treating burns with lavender essential oil. French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé found this effect of essential oils as quite interesting. He has contributed largely to the science of using essential oils for medical purposes. This science is known as aromatherapy or treating through plant aroma.

However, essential oils will produce the desired effects only when they are pure. Chamomile essential oil is derived from the chamomile flowers and has a soothing and comforting impact. When used in the bath after the end of the day, one will experience a rejuvenation of the body and mind. Nevertheless, do you get the same effect if the essential oil used is impure? No. Moreover, if an oil to which one is allergic to has been mixed with the essential oil, you can also count on the side effects.

The most common of impurities found in essential oils are pesticides and insecticides. Now, the use of pesticides and insecticides to grow plants has become widely prevalent. In this case, it is very difficult to do away with pesticides to the most miniscule levels. The process of distillation ensures that most of this is removed from the pure essential oils to give just the unadulterated extracts of plants.

Nowadays, organic essential oils have becoming increasingly popular. Organic essential oils are manufactured from organically grown plants. When a plant is grown organically, no artificial fertilizers are utilized. This ensures that the essential oil that you are using is totally free of pesticides. However, be prepared to shell that extra price for procuring organically pure essential oils. Yet no one complains since they are buying essential oils for the desired effect and not just for showing off their collection.

Progesterone and its role in the body

Progesterone is a hormone naturally produced in the female body from both the ovaries and adrenal glands. As women age, hormone levels tend to decrease, progesterone is one of those hormones. When women reach menopause and are post menopause they need to supplement with progesterone to help prevent those nasty hot flashes and restore the bodies hormone to a more normal level.

Progesterone production is high during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and low during the follicular phase as well as being low before puberty and after menopause. Women who suffer from PMS, peri-menopause, post-menopause, vaginal dryness, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, uterine fibroid tumors, and endometrial carcinoma may benefit from progesterone therapy.

How do I choose the right Natural progesterone supplement for me? Supplemental sources of progesterone are available in oral and cream forms as well as lozenges, suppositories, and injectable forms. “Natural” progesterone refers to the type that matches exactly the substance produced in a woman’s body, as opposed to related synthesized molecules. The natural forms are preferred to the synthetic forms of progesterone by some doctors. According to John R. Lee, M.D., the well-known proponent of supplemental progesterone, transdermal progesterone (Progesterone Creams) can help achieve a more normal hormonal balance in the body.

When a woman takes progesterone she may experience, improved cholesterol levels, improved sleep, mood, concentration and memory, reduced risk of depression, reduced risk of endometrial cancer and breast cancer, reduced risk of senility and cognitive decline, and finally enhanced libido.

If you’re unsure about progesterone cream there is always the alternatives such as soya (isoflavonoids), Black cohosh, Dong quai, and Licorice to help bring your hormones back into balance naturally with out synthetic medications.

These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. If you feel there is a physical problem like hormone decline always consult your local physician before doing anything .

Preventing Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy through Ayurveda

Preventing Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy through Ayurveda

Definition:

Benign prostatic hypertrophy is swelling of Prostate gland. The prostate is a walnut sized gland that is only present in men. It is located just below the bladder and top of the penis. This gland surrounds the urethra ( the tube through which urine flows from the bladder and out through the penis ).
It is a very astonishing fact to know that the condition BPH has been explained in ayurveda long back. The anatomical position of prostate gland, symptoms of BPH and its remedies are explained by Acharya Sushruta.

The anatomical position of prostate gland is described in ayurvedic classics as follows
In Yogaratnakara it has been described as —
“ NAABHERADHASTHAATSANJAATAHA SANCHAARI YADI VAACHALAHA |
ASHTEELAAVAD GHANO GRANTHIROODHWAR MAAYATA UNNATAHA || “

Which means “ Below umbilicus (NAABHI), there is a hard gland which is little bit bulged and changes its place some times and some times stays stationary. This gland is like “Ashteela” (A small stone used to sharpen swords). This gland when affected by vitiated vata causes a disease called “vataashteela” (or benign prostate hypertrophy)

Sushruta explains the structure , anatomical position of prostate gland and symptoms of BPH as follows.

“SHACRANMAARGASYA BASTHESHCHA VAAYURANTARAMAASHRITAHAI
ASHTEELAAVADGHANAM GRANTHIMMOORDHVAMAAYATA MUNNATAM|| “

Which means – the place between rectum and bladder is occupied by vitiated vata it affects the easy flow of urine, stools and semen by enlarging the gland “ Ashteela”.

The prostate gland enlarges in all men as age advances. BPH is very common and affects one third of men who are over 50. A person suffering from BPH does not have the increased risk of prostate cancer.

Functions of Prostate gland

One of the main functions of the prostate is to produce a fluid, which contribute to the liquid portion of semen and this liquid allows the sperm to move freely.

The gland is divided into peripheral, transitional and central zone. The overgrowth takes place in central zone which leads to BPH.
Effects of BPH Prostate gland surrounds urethra. When prostate gland enlarges, it constricts the urethra reducing the urine flow. The emptying of bladder becomes very difficult because of this.

Causes of BPH

According to present medical concepts the actual cause of prostate enlargement is unknown.
But the causes of BPH are very well explained In ayurveda which is based on tridosha theory. The causes of vataashteela or BPH are explained as follows
Causes for vataashteela according to dosha theory:
vataashteela is caused by vitiated vayu and apaana vayu ( a subcategory of Vayu)

( APAANA VAYU is located in two testicles, urinary bladder, phallus, umbilicus, thighs, groins, anus and colon.

Functions of apana vaayu are Ejaculation of semen, voiding of urine, stools, elimination of menstrual blood and expulsion of fetus. )

. The vitiation of vayu and apaana vayu is caused by
1. Controlling the urge of urination
2. Controlling the urge of defecation
3. Over indulgence in sex.
4. Consuming dry, very cold and less quantity of food
5. Old age
6. General weakness
7. Indigestion
8. Physical and mental overexertion.

Symptoms of BPH

• Difficulty in starting to pass urine ( hesitancy ),
• A weak stream of urine,
• Dribbling after urinating
• The need to strain to pass urine,
• Incomplete emptying of bladder.
• Difficulty to control the urination urge.
• Having to get up several times in the night to pass urine,
• Feeling a burning sensation when passing urine.
• Passing urine mixed with blood (indication of infection)
Symptoms of vatashteela are described as follows.

“ VINMUTRAANILA SANGASCHA TANNAADMAANAMCHA JAAYATE|
VEDANAA CHA PARAA BASTOU VAATAASHTEELETI TAAM VIDUHU || “

The vitiated ashteela gland when enlarged is called as “vatashteela”. This enlarged gland causes
1. Obstruction to easy flow of urine.
2. Obstruction to Easy passage of stools and gas
3. Bloating of Stomach.
4. Pain in bladder.
When the above mentioned symptoms are noticed then one should seek proper medical advice.

Diagnosis

A digital rectal examination will be performed to examine the size of prostate by inserting a finger into the rectum. A distended bladder can be felt per abdomen. Ultra sound examination will be done to determine the amount of urine left in the bladder after urination. Routine urine test will be done to rule out infections.
A prostate gland tissue may be collected using a needle to check for cancerous cells

Ayurveda tips for SELF-CARE

If symptoms are mild, the following methods can be tried for relief:
1. Vata gets vitiated when natural urges are controlled. Hence do not control the natural urge of passing urine. Urinate when you first get the urge.
2. Go to the bathroom even if you do not have urge.
3. Alcohol, tobacco, coffee increase vata and vitiate it. Hence avoid alcohol, tobacco and coffee, especially after dinner.
4. Vata gets normalized and vitiation comes down when body is warm. This can be accomplished with regular exercises and keeping the body warm.
5. Mental exertion leads to increase of vata. Avoid mental exertion at work place and at home.
6. Avoid foods which cause constipation as constipation causes vitiation of vata..
Other general tips
1. Avoid drinking fluids from two hours before going to bed.
2. Avoid cold and cough medications that contain decongestants or antihistamines. These medications can increase BPH symptoms.
3. Avoid drinking excess amount of liquids. Distribute the intake of fluids throughout day.
4.

Prevention

BPH can be prevented by –
1. Consuming low fat diet
2. Including lots of fiber in diet ( fruits and vegetables which are rich in fiber).
3. Visiting your family physician as soon as you notice any symptoms while passing urine.

Apart from these many effective herbal remedies have been mentioned in Sushruta samhita and Yogaratnakara.

Prevent Cancer Through A Detox Diet

Getting cancer is very common nowadays. It may be a loved one, a relative or your next door neighbour, who has got cancer and is now desperately trying to find a cancer cure. Finding a cure when one is already diagnosed with cancer is definitely more difficult and nerve wrenching than adopting good cancer prevention habits in the first place. Learning how to prevent cancer is a must for everyone because cancer does not discriminate – anyone can get it.

To treat and prevent cancer, new ideas are being thrown out there everyday, but all of them are based on living a healthy lifestyle. Going on a detox diet is a newer form of cancer prevention that has really taken off.

Preventing cancer is possible if you keep your body healthy and free of toxins. Eating healthily is always advisable no matter what disease you are fighting. The reason for this is that healthy foods contain vitamins and have properties that make your body function better. A body that functions properly and at an efficient level stays healthier. That brings us to exercise. Exercise helps your body to burn fat and keeps your muscles toned. It also helps your heart and lungs work better which allows your blood to flow better and keeps waste moving through your body properly. Keeping a healthy lifestyle prepares your body to be healthy.

A detox diet helps your body organs to work at its optimal level and without obstruction. It helps help to remove toxins from your body and remove waste more efficiently. A detox program usually involves lots of fiber and water, and giving your body organs a break. Fiber helps your body to remove waste, which frees up your system to digest food better. This in return gives you more energy. Water has an overall effect on your energy levels and how your body functions. Instead of letting waste build up and causing loads of problems, the detox diet rids your body of waste that frees up your colon. In a nutshell, the detox diet lets your colon get back to work and for your colon to work optimally once again. A colon that is not working can only result in cancer.

Because all the causes of cancer are unknown, but just taking the time to become healthier in cancer prevention can do a lot for your health and future outlook.

Prevent brain cancer alternative treatment

As we know this earth is getting more polluted the human being is more getting captivated to different kinds of diseases. He is becoming more and more moderanised in the same way the diseases are also following him and attacking him in one or the other way. Now a days this cancer has become one of the major deadly disease which is trembling the human kind. This has number of kinds which can attack any part of the body. One among them is this brain cancer which attacks the brain. The brain is one of the core part of the body.

The brain, like any other tissue in the body, is made up of individual cells which are much smaller than a pinpoint, and require a microscope to see them. These cells are the smallest units which compose the brain, and there are several different types. A brain cancer can arise from any of the cells which make up the brain.

Brain cancer starts in just one cell. As the cell makes more and more copies of itself, it grows to form a tumor (which means a swelling). A benign tumor stays where it starts, although it can grow very large and press on crucial areas. In contrast, a malignant tumor has a capacity to spread, and is then called “brain cancer”. “Primary” brain cancer starts within the brain, and is the main subject of this transcript. In contrast, “secondary” brain cancer starts in some other organ (like lung or breast) and then spreads to the brain. This is called “brain metastasis”.

Like any cancer, the exact reason why one person gets brain cancer and another doesn’t is unknown. However, several things have been found to increase the risk of developing brain cancer:
1) Having rare family diseases, which present with cysts or bumps on or inside the body and high risk for brain tumors.
2) Exposure to certain chemicals, including chlorinated hydrocarbons (like PVC) and benzene, is associated with a higher risk of brain cancers.
3) Exposure to radiation has also been connected to developing brain cancers as well as other malignancies. The risk is greater if the person is exposed to at a young age to a higher dose. Pre-existing benign type tumors may become cancerous (called “malignant degeneration) if radiated.

This depends upon where in the brain the cancer arises, and how big it becomes before coming to medical attention. The brain has particular areas controlling thought, sight, hearing, sensation, movement, coordination and mood. The upper brain area tends to control the more advanced thought functions, while the middle controls mood and movement and the rear (or “brain stem”) stimulates breathing and heart rate. A tumor simply means a swelling, and isn’t necessarily cancer.

After hearing that you have cancer, your life is forever changed. This impact can be very emotional and very difficult to cope with. Everyone reacts differently but it is important not to feel alone or loose hope. No matter what stage of cancer or what type of cancer you have been diagnosed with, we believe that HOPE itself can be a great healing tool. People are realizing that they have choices in the type of health care they receive.

It is critical for the patient to get the correct treatment for brain cancer, the first time. He may go in the direction of the suggestions which he get from his dear ones or the physician. Here the patient should be careful to choose the right one for him. So that he may not go for the second attempt in his treatment. What we insist is to take the right decision in his treatment. Here at our center we treat you with the natural dietary supplements which are herbal and cures the disease with no side effects. Truly to speak the patient gets panic when he listens to this that he has been attacked with this deadly disease but he has to make up his mind and have a firm mind that he will get out of it and get treated with it with no crisis.

Medical research has shown that “activated” patients who ask questions and seek alternative medical care that feels right to them heal better than patients who passively comply with whatever the doctor recommends. People are realizing that serious diseases can be successfully treated with therapies that enhance the immune system and restore the body systems. They recognize that this approach stands in sharp contrast to the debilitating and often unsuccessful results from chemotherapy and radiation.

Activated patients from all over the world are now seeking alternative/complementary treatments for diseases that are often considered incurable by conventional doctors. More and more patients are regaining their health with these type therapies.

Effective alternative therapies are now available that offer patients a newfound hope for healing and the restoration of health. Nutritional medicine, detoxification therapies, lifestyle changes and psychological healing are but a few of the choices available today. These powerful therapies aim to restore the natural wisdom of the body. This is the future of medicine — choices for better health.

Medical treatment at our center focuses on the whole person, not just on the cancer. For example, when oncologists treat cancer using chemotherapy and/or radiation, they are focusing these powerful treatments on the cancerous tumor, which they consider to be the disease. We believe that the tumor is a symptom of many other chronically disturbed body systems. If a treatment like chemotherapy reduces the size of a tumor but does not address the various factors that allowed it to grow in the first place, then we feel treatment has been incomplete and recurrence is likely.

Premature Ejaculation

Most men have experienced the problem of premature ejaculation at some time in their life. Premature ejaculation is one of the most common sexual problems. Premature ejaculation is explained as a condition where in a person is unable to delay ejaculation to a point when it is mutually desirable for both the partners. That means ejaculation occurs before a man wants it to happen. Some men ejaculate during foreplay while some do so at the very entry itself.

But few men feel that 5 or 10 minutes time to have orgasm is not enough and they feel that this is also premature ejaculation. This suggests premature ejaculation is most likely psychological in origin than physiological. The exact cause of premature ejaculation is still unknown.

Ayurveda has said Kshiprumunchati Shukram……. this means the person will have Premature ejaculation when vata in his body aggravates and leads to a very quick ejaculation of shukra (semen).

The probable causes for premature ejaculation:

• Anxiety during the first experience of sex. Some men will develop
a longer-term anxiety toward sex, which can cause a prolonged experience
with premature ejaculation.

• A long period of abstinence from sex.

• Younger men tend to ejaculate more quickly than older men, as
experience seems to be associated with ejaculatory control.

• Depression or anxiety about poor sexual performance

• Anxiety due to anticipation of Rejection by partner.

• Anticipation of failure to satisfy his partner

• Anticipation of pain

• Adverse experiences with sex in childhood

• Religious beliefs

• Financial burdens

• Job stress

• Relationship problems

• Side effects of some prescription drugs

Apart from psychological causes some physiological causes like inflammation of prostate gland or spinal chord problems may cause premature ejaculation.

According to ayurveda when vayu gets vitiated it causes premature ejaculation. The following causes vitiates vata

• Consuming stale, spicy, cold and junk food (Men who are away from
home on business mostly consume this sort of food )

• staying up for long hours at night .

• long gap between meals

• Controlling natural urges (this happens during long corporate
meetings)

• Physical and mental exertion.

• Under nourishment due to worries and grief

• Sitting for long hours in uncomfortable chairs.

• Traveling at high speeds.

Prevention:

• Seek psychotherapy to maintain a healthy attitude towards sex.

• Do not blame yourself for premature ejaculation. Anybody can
experience premature ejaculation.

• Speak openly with your partners to avoid misunderstanding and
miscommunication.
• Use some relaxation techniques to reduce stress.

• Have full knowledge about sex

• Try to minimize the above said causative factors.

Simple Remedies

Many techniques are used to control premature ejaculation. “The squeeze technique” is popular and effective amongst all. Squeeze technique is a behavioral therapy. If a man senses that he is about to experience premature ejaculation, he interrupts sexual relations. Then the man or his partner squeezes the shaft of his penis between a thumb and two fingers applying gentle pressure just below the head of the penis for 20 seconds. And then sexual relations can be resumed. The technique can be repeated as often as necessary. When this technique is successful, it enables the man to learn to delay ejaculation with the squeeze, and eventually, to gain control over ejaculation without the squeeze.

The Masters & Johnson method:

• The best way to combat premature ejaculation is by learning to
control the sensations prior to orgasm. This method takes time and
practice, but it is very effective.

• First you need to bring yourself close to orgasm (this can be
done via masturbation, without the involvement of your partner) and then
stop and relax before recommencing. Each time you need to bring yourself
closer to orgasm until finally you cannot control it. If you do this
often enough, you will learn where your point of climax is. This is
helpful when interacting with your partner.

• You will need to practice reaching your climax point with your
partner by engaging in non-penetrative sex so that when you feel it is
near, you signal them to stop and you allow your erection to subside.
This also needs to be repeated so that you and your partner are familiar
with the procedure.

• Once you feel you are ready for intercourse, it is best to start
by lying on your back so that you can guide your partner during
penetration. When you are near orgasm, give your partner a signal to stop
and you should relax and start again. Once you get the hang of it (it may
take several weeks or months), premature ejaculation shouldn’t be too
much of a problem.

• A variant of this method involves the partner squeezing the tip
of the penis just before orgasm (“squeeze technique”). This pushes blood
out of the penis and reduces the erection.

Practical Aromatherapy

Antiviral Activity of Essential Oils

The body of evidence regarding the effectiveness of natural botanicals against a great variety of viruses is growing. Over twenty years ago, German scientists found extracts of more than 100 species of the Lamiaceae family to have antiviral effects. This discovery lead to and increase in the examination of essential oils in Europe for the treatment of viral infections.

Essential oils from many plant families have now been demonstrated to have antiviral properties. Interestingly, different plant families exhibit varying degrees of effectiveness depending on the virus strain. This is due to the particular molecular structures found in each type of oil, which penetrate physical entities to varying degrees (different tissues, cell walls, mucous membranes, etc). The effect on each virus strain depends also on the virus structure (enveloped, non-enveloped, molecular symmetry, etc.)

Certainly, one of the reasons for oils’ effectiveness en vivo is their lipophillic character – essential oils are easily absorbed into mammalian tissues, where they may produce the greatest results. In fact, when studying the anti-viral effects of essential oils, researchers found that normal cells seemed to acquire a special resistance to viral penetration, though the mechanism for this effect is not yet known.

Melissa and the Herpes Virus

One of the Lamiaceae plants studied, Melissa (Melissa officinalis – also known as Lemon Balm), was shown particularly efficacious against the herpes virus (HSV). Doctor Dietrich Wabner, a professor at the Technical University of Munich, has even reported that a one-time application of Melissa oil led to a complete remission of HSV lesions. A cream medication for Herpes outbreaks, who’s active ingredient is an extract of Melissa, is now sold in Germany under the name Lomaherpan. Use of Melissa essential oil itself may be just as effective – the oil can be applied directly to the lesions (or diluted to 10% in carrier if sensitivity is noted) to speed healing. Further occurrences can be prevented by applying oil to the area when sensations signal an eminent outbreak – repeating this protocol 3 or 4 times has been reported to cause total remission in some individuals.

Other essential oils found effective against the Herpes virus include bergamot, eucalyptus, lemongrass and tea tree. Related to HSV is Herpes Zoster or ‘Shingles’, another common virus-mediated skin condition. Application of a 50/50 blend of Ravensara essential oil and Tamanu nut oil has been found extremely effective for reducing symptoms by many people.

Antiviral Components of Oils

The list of essential oils exhibiting antiviral effects is extensive: Melissa (as above), tea tree, juniper, eucalyptus, thyme, palmarosa, lavender, rosemary, clove, laurel, cinnamon bark, anise, rose, lemongrass, geranium, neroli, bergamot, clary sage, and dill. The antiviral effect of an essential oil is due to particular components of the oil – some oils will work just as effectively on a particular infection as another, because they contain similar amounts of a certain component. The components of essential oils showing antiviral activity, and the oils in which they can be found, are as follows (from K. Schnaubelt, Ph.D. – Advanced Aromatherapy, p. 36):

Anethol – found in Anise
Alpha-Sabines – found in Tea Tree, Laurel, and other oils
Beta-Caryophyllene – found in Lavender, Rosemary, Thyme Linalool, and other oils
Carvone – found in Dill
Cinnamic aldehyde – found in Cinnamon Bark
Citral – found in Melissa, Lemongrass and other oils
Citronellol – found in Rose and Geranium
Eugenol – found in Clove
Gamma-Terpinene – Found in Juniper, Eucalyptus, Niaouli, Tea Tree and other oils
Linalol – found in Lavender and Neroli
Linalyl acetate – found in Clary Sage, Lavender, Bergamot and other oils

Limited In-Vivo Data

Good studies of application of these essential oils in cases of illness are difficult to come by, as infecting people with viruses in the laboratory to subsequently be treated with aromatics would be a difficult process at best. The oils and components above have mostly shown effectivenessin-vitro, though tests also indicate that the anti-viral effect should occur in-vivo as well. As with Melissa, it has been HSV that has been most thoroughly examined, because of the relative simplicity of doing so. But there is nothing particularly special about the herpes virus, and proper oil/pathogen paring should prove as effective.

There are some noted case studies by professional aromatherapists. Of importance in these studies is the oil/symptom relationship. Essential oils from plants of the Myrtaceae family – notably Eucalyptus Radiata and Tea Tree – and Ravensara (also high in Eucalyptol) seem to have helped in cases with respiratory symptoms. For the lower respiratory tract, Hyssop decumbens (from the same plant family as Melissa) has been of interest. Essential oils for such cases may be used either in a diffuser, being taken at regular intervals, or through massage, diluted in a carrier oil.

Conclusion

Because of the difficulty in many cases of illness in determining the exact virus type involved, more specific application cannot be given. Certainly, in cases of HSV, Melissa has been shown effective in a number of studies. For respiratory infections, Eucalyptus and Ravensara have been used with success, and can be safely used as an adjunct to regular medical care. These oils may support one’s recovery on a physiologic level – essential oils also play a part in uplifting emotions, which may also speed healing, or at least improve mental outlook during the healing process. For such instances, one may simply find the essential oil or combination that one finds pleasant, calming, and/or uplifting. PLEASE NOTE: In no cases, however, should self-treatment with essential oils be used in place of professional medical care where signs/symptoms of infectious illness are present.

Potpourri With Herbs And Essential Oils

Potpourri is defined as mixture of dried flower, herbs, leaves, roots, barks and spices providing fragrance. Placed either in decorative wooden bowl, tied in small bags made from sheer fabric or specially designed pot pourri vase, a potpourri can last long if blended correctly. The word potpourri comes from the French meaning “rotten pot”.

Its uses are many. You can use it to perfume the air, keep it in closets or drawers, make room decorations with attractive baskets or bowls or make personal gifts to share it with family and friends. Dry potpourri consists of dried, scented, crisp materials concocted for fragrance as well as beauty.

The basics of potpourris are simple and few. Dried or fresh sweet-smelling plant materials, other aromatic ingredients like whole spices, bits of citrus peels or shavings of pleasant smell wood chips; essential oils and fixative which combines with the essential oils to preserve their fragrance. Aromatic plant materials include rose petals, marigold flowers, foliage, lavender, mints, and fragrant herbs of all kinds. Fixatives fix the aroma i.e. they make the scent or fragrance last longer. They come in dried, powdered or liquid form. Common fixatives are orris root; oak moss, cellulose, and benzoin.

The best herbs for potpourri are lavender, scented geranium leaves, lemon verbena, lemon balm, and mints. Dry them, and then make your own mix. Sprinkle with essential oils to extend the life of the potpourri. By adding a little of this and that you become familiar with the process and begin to creating your own blends.

Choose from variety of themes such as – woody, floral, spicy, fruity or citrus for making a potpourri. Assemble and blend your flowers, herbs, leaves, etc accordingly. Mix the fixative with the spices and sprinkle few drops essential oil for fragrance. Blend well, seal and store in warm dry dark for place for a month or so. Choose pretty containers, jars and bowls, to display.

Below are few common potpourri recipes that any amateur can start with –

Basic Rose Potpourri – Blend 1 tsp of rose essential oil to 3 tbsp coarse ground orris root and let it sit for a few days. If you add 2 tbsp each of ground cloves and cinnamon, the blend will emit a spicy fragrance. 2 cups lavender and ¼ cup ground tonka bean exudes a sweet floral scent. For a musky scent, add 1 cup patchouli leaves and ½ cup sandalwood and vetiver root. For a fruity fragrance, 1 cup each of dried citrus peel, rose, lemon scented geranium leaves works wonders.

Balsam Fir Potpourri – Blend 1 cup balsam needles, ¾ cup sweet woodruff leaves, 1 cup dried violet blossoms, 1 cup lavender, 2 tbsp salt, ¼ cup bee balm blossoms and 1 oz balsam Peru tincture. Shake the mixture occasionally and let it age for a month or so.

To make potpourri as Xmas gift – mix 1 cup each of whole allspice, star anise, ginger root, and sassafras bark, 2 cups each of orange peel, lemon verbena leaves, and rose buds and petals and 30 drops allspice oil. Seal and let set to “cure”, shaking occasionally.

For Citrus Blend – 4 cups lemon verbena leaves, 2 cups lemon balm leaves, 2 cups orange mint, 2 cups lemon, lime or orange scented geranium leaves, 1 cup apple mint, 4 cups ground citrus peel, 4 cups marigold or calendula petals, 2 cups orris root, mixed with 1 tbsp orange oil and 1 tbsp lemon oil. Seal and let it set with occasional shaking.

Personal experiences with noni

Personal experiences with noni | Tips For optimal health, weight loss, and wellness.

by John

Mother says “A Noni a day, will keep the doctor away.”

Hey YOU, listen up…

Mother says… “A Noni a day,

will keep the doctor away.”

What is the truth about Noni Juice

Hi, my name is John, and I want to let you know the truth about Noni – also known in the world of plants as morinda citrifolia. I am qualified to share with you about this noni information, not only because I am youthful looking, handsome, and sexy guy, but also because I have a Noni plant growing in my back yard.

Yes, right here behind my house in the Philippines, and many of my neighbor’s yards have noni plants also. The black volcanic soil here is excellent for growing the noni plants. My wife went outside this afternoon and picked a small basket of fresh Noni fruit for me for later today. Lucky me!!!

When I drink the noni fruit juice, I like to mix it with a little pineapple juice and

7-Up to make the taste easier to swallow. The seeds are very spicy – like hot peppers — and burn my tongue when I suck on them to get loose the flesh of the fruit.

Was I surprised …

The very first time I ate some of the fresh Noni fruit and drank the juice it had an immediate effect on my health. The very next day, I noticed that my back pains had vanished – gone away – and stayed away, as long as I consumed Noni fruit and juice every day. I have had lower back pains for over 40 years. Chiropractors helped, but the pain still did not go away.

Guess what – the cravings I had always had for snacks, junk foods, and sweets disappeared the very next day after taking Noni. I was definitely eating too much and gaining weight. After using Noni, my weight loss problems are gone.

I know – this is all only anecdotal evidence, and not based on any scientific study involving my use of Noni – but I am convinced of the benefits of using Noni. For me – it helps tremendously in making me feel better. It has cleared up a lot of medical and health problems that previously were dogging me.

Just one idea gave me instant wealth …

This all started about 20 years ago. The noni fruit that I have eaten for many years has helped me feel healthier, look younger, lose weight, given me youthful skin, with fewer aches and pains of old age. You might call me a “health nut” because of all the health information I am constantly digesting about alternative medicine, vitamins, supplements, minerals, antioxidants, folk medicine, herbals, and so forth.

My body is over 60 years old, but most folks think I am in my late 40’s. My youthful looks are likely due to the various herbs, vitamins, and supplements, including noni, that I take every day. I have been a serious “health nut” for about 20+ years now. My studies, research, and use of herbal products have convinced me of the tremendous health value and benefits of herbs in my diet. I have seen my own health and well being improved, sometimes slowly, but always surely. Try Noni yourself – you will see positive changes in your body.

Why should YOU use Noni capsules or juice?

Research studies suggest that the compounds found in Noni may work at the cellular level in the human body to help abnormally functioning cells resume normal function and help normal cells maintain regular function.

There are several theories that may explain why Noni works so very beneficially in the body. Some believe it is a selection of polysaccharides, giving Noni fruit its beneficial effects. Other theories, based on research study findings, suggest that Noni promotes the production of nitric oxide in the body, which has been shown to strengthen the body’s natural ability to fight tumors, viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections.

A more popular explanation is called the “xeronine system” developed by the forerunner in Noni research, Dr. Ralph Heinicke Ph.D. who teamed up with Dr. Neil Solomon, a medical doctor. The Heinicke-Solomon Theory explains Noni’s wide range of effectiveness in the human body.

The ancient Aryan physicians of India especially valued Noni fruit because it protected the skin from becoming dry and cracked from the sun. My investigation of the published scientific literature on Morinda citrifolia yielded more than 100 articles pertaining to this medicinal Noni plant.

After I started taking Noni, I found that I was more alert, more energetic, more balanced, my skin was glowing more than I could ever recall, and my digestion was greatly improved. I attributed the benefits of noni to the interaction of the known components along with the unknown components, which perhaps work synergistically with all the other nutrients to give me optimum health.

Researchers have reported that significant reductions in total cholesterol and triglycerides were seen in smokers who drank a product containing juice from the fruit of the noni tree every day for a month.
